Re: Winning in BF2- matter over mind.

well ive ownd Bf2 for a week now, and all i can say is its very hard for a new comer to outwit anyone who is familiar with the layout of each map. at first my tallyho attitude got me killed many times. I found taking things easy and doing alot of sniping has helped me alot with tactics and the lay of the land..

Sitting back somewhere distant just watching the action and taking the occasional potshot has paid off for me, even though my score usaully sucks. its taught me alot about how the maps play and the tactics some players use when taking over a checkpoint!

also one thing i have noticed on here is that many of you pride yourselves on your stats flaunting them at every opportunity, well thats fair enough i suppose, youve put the hard yards in and deserve to flaunt them. but on another note, to a newbie like myself being very concious of my rank and stats, it can really take the fun out of playing and make you play differently, as your subconcious is telling you one thing (your stats, you need good stats) and your gut telling you another dont do this (wait) you gotto slow down.

since ive told myself to ignore stats and just play for fun, ive done really well and follow my gut instinct on matters knowing when to take a risk and when not to. now i still dont know the maps very well, some better then others im beginning to hold my own and feel alot more comfortable attacking when i need to or am asked to!!

as it is now i just got my vetran snipers badge and im really chuffed with it! but still have a long way to go..

so to any newbie my advice would be to just be a sniper and sit back and watch the action for a while taking the odd shot here and there! find a simple hiding spot like a bush or something and get a few kills!

so no i dont think it is mind over matter, well not where a newbi is concerned. it also depends on what you are playing for STATS or FUN !

I agree that there is little thinking involved, and that speed = success.

The intent of the game seems to have been that squads would take transport helos and apcs etc. to the objective, take it then move on. While in the transport on the way to the next objective they heal and rearm.

But it's just too easy to take out the transport, even FAVs are seen by aircraft target aquisition systems. With 1.3 either the AT got stronger, or the armour got weaker, either way providing less incentive to squad up and use APCs.

There's a lot that needs changed to make BF2 a more realistic sim type game, but IMO it would only improve it. However with DICE Canadas track record of screwy patches I'd just prefer they develop new maps and just leave the game alone. I'm tired of having to re-adjust old habits to compensate for the latest unwanted changes.

I agree with the above posts.... even when you spot an enemy first and try to cut him off or flank him chances are as soon as you fire off 1 bullet they will start to bunnyhop/pronedive/monkeyflip and YOU WILL DIE FIRST even though you got the jump on him. Your only chance is to headshot and NEVER MISS. This is the part about the game that saddens me the most because although its "arcade realism" you should ALWAYS get the kill when you surprise an enemy. Unless of course you totally blow it by dropping a grenade on your foot....

Good post, but notice the flaw? Youre talking about clans, and if youre a competitive player, and play with your buddies, things flanking and whatnot comes in. More than that, your skill level actually backs your mind up. I however am mostly talking about outsmarting being subsitute for shooting skills.

Laying C4 and claymore traps looks to be one of the few, and those are the tools intended for such purpose anyway, you dont improvise, you use them as they were intended to be used.

There is camping in BF2, and it usually involves a LAV-25, and a spawn point. :p

Seriously, though, I agree with you for the most part. It's rare to see true tactical play, but it DOES happen once in a while, when you've got a competent squad together on VOIP. But, I have to admit, the reason a competent squad is so deadly is often that they simply have a couple good shooters rushing in a semi-coordinated human wave.

But when tactics happen, they rock. I've seen some nutty coordination on tank battles in Operation Harvest, and infantry in Sharqi.

Mike Brown? Damn him, he must have written an evil version of the book by his Doppleganger, Dan Brown.

I'm not going to read all 36 posts on the subject, and for that reason I won't begrudge anyone who ignores this.

I agree with the OP completely, but I don't think it's a BF2 problem I think it's largely a person problem. Someone back on page one mentioned TS. When I happen to get into a squad that talks (I only play VOIP servers) or better yet, a TS squad, we tend to do very well. The organization is brilliant and there is indeed strategy, quick thinking, who goes where/does what, etc. The problem is that most people play BF2 (an awesome multiplayer experience) as if it were a single player game.
