True Fix For Verifying Client Data

There are many of us that seem to take forever to get ingame while others are done verifying within seconds. Some say it's a ram issue, but it isn't by far there are quite a few people how have gone to two gigs to see if it works, but no it doesn't. I was told it was my processor, so I upgraded to my P4, that didn't do anything at all except let me turn my setting up . emptying my cache folders didn't really do anything. After doing a lot of research and reading this post: http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55883 we can pretty much narrow it down to the hard drive.

If you are truly annoyed with this there is a fix, it costs money, but it may be worth it .

The fix: new hard drive :O!

First off find out what type of hard drives your computer supports. IE: ATA/133, SATA, etc. If you don't know. Then download this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html. Install it then open it up. Click on storage. Go to ATA. Select your primary HD. Look down to Max. UDMA Transfer mode and in paranthesise (omg SP?) it should say some thing like (ATA-133, SATA, etc.)

Now that we know what type of connector you can get it's time to go shopping .

I wouldn't recommend retail stores, because there stuff is expensive.

    For us U.S.er's go to:
Newegg offers customers an awesome experience shopping for computers, hardware, electronics, networking solutions, and more. Upgrade your shopping experience today!

    or

    For you EUer's:
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk

Search for hard drives with your connector.

If you have ATA100 or 133, you can't get above 7,200 rpm, but if you have SATA you can get up to 15,000 rpm .

The size is up to you, I would recommend atleast 80 gigs.

Get one with atleast a 8mb cache a 16mb would even be better.

Some of the good brands are Samsung, Hitachi, Maxtor, and Western Digital.

Once you find a decent one grab a copy of windows.

    win xp home:
We’re sorry, but this page does not existing. Please visit our home page for more information.

    win xp pro:
We’re sorry, but this page does not existing. Please visit our home page for more information.

    win xp media center:
We’re sorry, but this page does not existing. Please visit our home page for more information.

Now shopping is done . Order it up.

If your mo'bo supports atleast two HD's, you can move your current primary to your slave connector. Now documents and .exe installs can be executed from the second hard drive, but games and stuff will have to be re registered on in the new windows registry.

Once you new stuff gets to you put the new Hard drive in as the "Master" hard drive. Proceed to booting up. Once you boot go to BIOS or set up and reroute the booting sequence to the disk drive and move the primary HD to the second spot. Make sure the primary HD is the second one, because that's where windows will isntall . Put in the first windows disk, exit and save, you computer will reboot. Now follow the directions and install :). Install your GFX card stuff, internet crap, and then your games, do a few defrags between installs and you'll have to reboot sometimes. Install the games and patches, defrag, restart, FRAG it up!!!

I've got twin SATA 74GB Raptors at RAID 0 and honestly it still takes me a bit.

Small error in your post. They're aren't any 15k RPM SATA drives, only SCSI. 10k is the fastest you can get SATA.

Not to mention that they probably won't have to buy a new copy of Windows if their just installing a new hard drive.

Not to mention also, this is the wrong forum.

I found when I didn't re-install SF / EF/ AF on top of Vanilla BF2, VCD was less than 5 seconds. But I still like to play these games once in awhile, so I'll just live with it.

Soo much negativity? Maybe 10,000RPM's is all you can get NOW!, but who knows what the future will bring. Almond said Max Capacity is 15,000 for SATA, just because the product doesn't exsist TODAY doesn't mean it's not possible.

For example, when America Decided they wanted to go to the Moon. They looked to the North and saw a Company(Avro Aerospace) building Jets that nobody could compete with. WOW, they said. So they lied to the Canadian Prime Minister, telling him that "Planes Patroling the skies is Over", saying that Missle Defense is the way of the future. Blahblahblah, Avro Aerospace's funding was cut by the Canadian Governemnt, and most of the Scientists / Engineers went to what is now known as NASA, the rest is history. Soo you see, with time anything is possible.

You must be asking yourself what my stupid story has to do with a 15,000 RPM Sata Drive, or the thread starters post.........

Well verifying speeds varied by great amounts between the different patch versions (and I DON'T mean using servers that don't verify at all), so buying a new hard drive can't be "The Solution (TM)".

He didn't say there will be, he said you can get them.

IMO 15k SATA will naver be a reality, we will see hybrid/solid state drives before we ever see consumer level 15k drives.

How would you know? Sometimes it' the server, but I've looked at other peoples systems and really narrowed it down.

Well buying a hard drive will speed things up of course.
But verifying was faster in earlier patches for some people, and at least for me I am sure that I am talking about pure servers, it's standard in my filter list from day 1.

So ok, I agree that buying a faster hard drive will help definitely - but that's steamroller tactics.

um, do you think solid state might be a cheaper solution ( that still kills verify time) than sata raid 0 right now?

No, right now there is nothing solid state that is worth the money.

However hybrid drives will be coming out very soom. IIRC Samsung is bringing the first one to market.

good because the whole sata solution seems like not the right thing for such a low budget pc as mine, but i am sick of waiting for verification, so ill wait for a good solid state/hybrid.

Some motherboard chipsets don't support the higher transfer rate that SATA is capable of. A specific VIA chipset (don't remember number) forces you back to Sata 150 transfer speed and not the newer Sata 300. Just because you have Sata doesn't mean you can use it to it's full speed. Be sure to read the specs and possible issues with your own specific motherboard.

Im looking at the iRAM concept that might be much faster.

Basically you are proposing building a new computer to get shorter VCD times.
