once you get to rank lance corperal you will be able to unlock you first weapon

You play online on ranked servers to increase your score. When your score reaches ceatain levels you get unlocks.

thanks but when i search for a ranked server it comes up with nothing

There's a little box in the server screen that says something about ranked. Make sure it's selected, and click update servers.

ok i did that and when i try to join a game it says check my internet connection and try agian i have 10 mb broadband do i need a patch or something

Yes you need to download the 1.3 patch.

There are still some unranked servers running 1.2, but all of the ranked servers run 1.3.

Ranked servers are required to run the latest patches. If you want to get points, then you need to downlaod the patch.
