OK guys , help me out. Windows XP and why?

Some of you out there laugh because I am still running WIN 2K. It has served me flawlessly for years, and I know it backwards and forwards. Ive used it on all of my home computers as well as every computer - including the on air RAID server controllers for a television station I had a hand in building. Ive never seen windows XP on a machine that had decent specs, and Ive NEVER seen XP not act sluggish compered to any of my 2000 boxes. I however admit that I may have just supernaturally bad timing.

What are the improvements (in your opinion) of windows XP over Win 2K? I am NOT concerned about security improvements, as right now Im pretty damned bulletproof. Im mainly concerned with tweakability and performance. Any constructive comments are welcomed. Fanboys can leave through the same door they came in.

Im probably going to dual boot XP Pro just to try it out. I guess after that its on to see if Vista is any good.

Hum...maybe not such a good idea. If anyone thinks Vista will be stable enough to use as your primary OS when it comes out is sadly mistaken. Does anyone remember how crapy XP ran when it first came out? I am going to wait for the first few floods of patches to come out before I even touch that OS.

Now I know its only a beta copy but I have installed and used Vista and want to poke my eyes out it is so slow.

Windows XP is W2K jazzed up. It uses 95% of the same source code.

Hum...maybe not such a good idea. If anyone thinks Vista will be stable enough to use as your primary OS when it comes out is sadly mistaken. The point is that Vista will be the new operating system for the next 4-5 years. If you have a stable OS now and no need to really change it, then why waste money on XP. I think that XP will start getting phased out.

Once Vista is up and running, the new wave of software will start being written for it. There is already better driver support for Vista than there ever was for XP64.

Yes I know Vista will be the next OS to take over, i'm just saying its probly not a good idea to have the idea that you can just switch over to Vista the day it comes out without any issues.

Dont kid yourself mate, Military and govenment systems have been hacked into by 9 years olds. And if someone actually knew enough about security to know they were 'bulletproof' they wouldnt be asking this question

I think of myself as bulletproof the same way as you look at yourself as a personal primary target for a thermonuclear weapon... you dont. You are an insignifigant target, so noone would waste a nuke on you. Thanks for wasting your time on a backhanded insult though!

I prefer 2k over XP too. No Problems at all. Only the EA downloader wont work on 2k....but on Vista.

Why?

Because it's way more solid tham vista and 98 or NT or me or 98se. Now I can't speak for win2k because you seem to be having no problems whatsoever but I will tell you this; XP is simply a beautified version of win2k. It reminds me of windows ME which was a prettier version of 98. Don't chnge it if you don't want to but if you do, you won't have a hard time getting aquainted with it because you CAN make it look like win2k if you REALLY want to.

Thanks for the replies guys! I figured it was about the same, since its built on the same structure... i just feel mildly embarassed when someone asks me something about XP and I have no idea, cause Ive never ran it personally.

I also run BF2 on 2000. I recently installed XP in a 2nd partition just for compatibility testing since some games (like BF2) don't "support" 2000 even though they run fine on it. That way if something isn't working I can test it in XP just to make sure the OS isn't the problem. Also, there are some things (like the BF2 editor) which won't install on 2000 although they will run in 2000 once they are installed through XP.

But if you know 2k that good, and it has serve you well, i would keep it and wait see how Vista does, and upgrade to it if worth it. If not, i am sure XP would probably get a price cut once Vista comes out and you can update then.

About EA Downloader, buy the expasion packs, go to a friends computer, install EAD. Download the files and burn them ISO to a cd, and go install it on your computer, hope that works.
