Just got BF2 last night. Do I need to buy any of the expansion packs to play online? Am I limiting myself to a smaller number of servers by just playing BF2 without expansions?

Vanilla BF2 has way too many servers... EF has barely any... AF has a few, but not too many... And SF can also be hard to get to.
So you don't need to buy any, but it can increase your playing pleasure if you buy some. -

Actually you will be happy to know that most people play the original BF2, aka "Vanilla", as opposed to Special Forces or the Booster Packs. (Although Armored Fury Booster pack did just come out and is becoming more and more popular.)

yeh umm buddy, did u install atleast patch 1.2. if not do it because 1.2 and 1.3 are the only patches hosting servers. and no expansions are optional.hope tht fixed ur prob!!!lol. heres a where u get it. go to like filecloud.com. create and acount(takes like 5 minutes) and download patch 1.3.Comment

I installed BF2 last night and immediately downloaded the 1.3 FULL patch from EA website. Installed it.
BF2 has been extremely flakey it took me about an hour and a half just to get in to my first game without crashing(every time BF2 crashes I have to reboot before I can try and run it again or it will just spit out a BF2.exe error when launching).
Once I got in to the game FINALLY it was stable until I went to bed.
From what I can tell this 1.3 patch really sucks.Comment
