Just got BF2. Having issues. Please help.

Just bought BF2 last night. I installed it on my computer and looked for any updates. Saw there was a full 1.3 patch 4xx MB. Installed the full 1.3 update.

When I run the play online link on my desktop I get logged in and it launches right in to a game. is this normal? It also sometimes then crashes right to the desktop and if I try to launch the game again it crashes immediately without even going in. This causes me to have to reboot before I can get BF2 to even launch again. After about 2 hours of trying and rebooting I actually got in to a game. I figured out that you should hit ESC instead of click on join game.

Is there a different patch for online play I need to look for? Is there anything I can do to get this working more stable? I have a good system and I work in IT so I am pretty knowledgable. This game seems to run extremely slowly(loading, navigating the online system, etc) and crashes excessively for no reason requiring a reboot before you can attempt to play again. I have a decent system that should be able to play(p4 2ghz, 2gb ram, ati radeon x1300, sb audigy, cable).

Any tips are appreciated. Would love to get in to this game!

Stop using the 'Play Now' button and just click on the 'normal' BF2 link. This will stop you from going directly into a game.

BF2 has been like this since the erlease of the 1.3 patch, so either reinstall and use the 1.22 (you won't get many online servers though but it'll be stable) or stick with 1.3 until DiCE bring out a 1.4 patch to fix the crashes (it's planned but no dates announced. Don't expect it for another 3-4 weeks though).

Yeah. It's difficult to know what to tell people really regarding the patch. If I was you I'd stick with the 1.3 though. I find that after a fresh reboot my system seems more stable and by not using the 'play now' button it'll make life a lot easier anyhow.

If it's a very long load than look for the Linux servers in the server browser that don't have the Green TV icon by their name. These will be faster to load (no data verifing stage)
