    A SimonSays Guide:Setup Saitek X45 Joystick

    Greetings,

This guide is written for XP users and TeamSpeak 2 Ver.2.0.32.60 and BF2 1.3. I also have Special Forces, Euro Forces and Armored Fury installed. I am currently running this on an Intel P4 3GHz 2 Gigs of ram.

First of all, so we are all working on the same page, you will need to download the following tools.
Saitek Download Page for XP Go here to get the XP drivers and the XP programming software.

    Saitek's NukeUSB program

I am going to assume you have the X45 and possibly misinstalled it, or you have just gotten your new X45 and want to get started and do it right the first time. First lets deal with the misinstalls. Not installed yet, skip to the next paragraph. If you have already installed your software, and you are not sure you did it exactly right (meaning installed it without the X45 being plugged in) then we need to remove the X45 drivers from your system. Use the NukeUSB utility I am giving you above. It only goes after Saitek product and was released by them on the Saitek driver disk you may or may not have. once uninstalled, unplug your X45 and restart your computer. Now we are all on the same page and can continue together.

Install the driver software. You will be prompted during the install to also plug in your new joystick. Do so at that time. Remember, the throttle must be hooked to the joystick and then the joystick plugs into the USB on the computer. All done? good. Now install the programming software. once done? restart.

You should have a pretty new ICON now on the low right side of your monitor

and if clicked on, should have a nifty little menu.

I want you to select the CONTROL PANEL from this new menu and when it comes up, you will have a tab across the top of the panel that says CALIBRATE. Select it

and then click on the CALIBRATE button. it will run you through the paces to make sure your flight stick is tuned up.

Once done, close that screen. Now lets get team speak working. If you are like me and set your team speak to work with a Click to Talk button, you either have a keyboard selected button or a mouse button assigned to it. I use MOUSE3. The Joystick is not recognized for TS, so lets go back to our new Joystick control panel on the lower left and this time select PROFILE EDITOR.

Go to the first pulldown menu and select NEW. I then set my right hand forward index button (can't see it from this image but its to the front and right of the trigger) or Fire C to be my Mouse 3. I did this by first clicking my mouse below teh Fire C area and putting it into an edit mode. Once it was in an edit mode, I clicked my mouse3 button (on my mouse) and it was recorded. I then clicked on the Green Check, saving the record. I then clicked just to the right of Fire C and edited the name to add Teamspeak so I remember what the hell I programmed it to be. I then went back to the File command menu and said Save As and named it BattleCom(name it what you want).

We are done with TS setup. When you start your computer, you will need to go to your lower right joystick menu and select your profile which will appear at the top of the menu. Different profiles for different games of course :)

    Now for Battlefield2.

Go into the game and then click on OPTIONS and then CONTROLS

Under the common controls, I made my Enter and Exit controls Joybutton3 (the covered main stick button) so I can eject only after I uncover the button. This leads me not to accidentally eject because I hit a switch by mistake. I also made Joybutton5 (small button on the throttle) my chute button as I just want to be able to operate both in an emergency without having to find the right buttons on my keyboard. Hitting the chute button while still in the plane doesn't do squat so don't worry about accidentally activating your chute while in the cockpit (quit your dang giggling).

Now click over to the Aircraft controls

Click on accellerate. Move your throttle forward and backwards (and write which way you did it first) Setting the acceleration will automatically set the deceleration too.

Do the same by clicking on Pitch Forward. Then move the stick forward and back (and write down which direction you did first) and the game will fill in both Pitch Forward and Pitch Back.

Do the same for the rolling. I also set my flares to be my large orange button on my throttle and my afterburner to be my pinkie trigger. I set fire for trigger. Alt fire as Joybutton2 and clycle weps to Joybutton 3. All on the main stick. I also set all my views to my main sticks low hat button. The neat thing about the specific way I set it is that if you hit forward and you are already looking forward, it's the F9 that removes the front panel while you are flying so you can see more. Pulling back lets me look behind me after a bombing run to see where the suckers fell and immediately go back to forward mode by the forward push of the hat.

Are you all set for the aircraft? hit the APPLY in the lower right hand side. Click on the OK button to the message confirming your setup.

Lets move on to testing this out.

Now I want you to go to your MULTIPLAYER and then CREATE LOCAL. Select a large map like Dalia Plant and make sure you put a password on your server. This will prevent unwanted guests. Now, spawn at either airfield and hop in a jet. WARNING WARNING WARNING. The throttle is not at ZERO when it is pulled all the way back in an aircraft. It is in FULL REVERSE. You want to keep the throttle in the middle to keep it close to no movement. Now push it forward. If the plane moves forward, you are good for the first part. If not, then go back to your control panel (by clicking on Esc and then OPTIONS > CONTROLS > AIRCRAFT and reset the throttle controls and do it the opposite way than the last time you did them. Hit the APPLY and then click OK and hit ESC to get back into game and see if your changes worked. If so, the next test is pulling back on the stick and seeing if the plane goes up. If so, great. If not, repeat the instructions above to redo their setting. Same with roll left and right. Check your HAT views too. Try ejecting and pulling the Chute. All good? Lets go set up the chopper then.

Esc back to controls and this time go to OPTION > CONTROLS > HELICOPTER

You know the drill from above. Do it again. Same controls mean no relearning what the hell you did Keep it simple. There is one major difference. With the Helicopter, the throttle starts all the way back so you don't take off inadvertently. Back is down and forward is up.

Do you see the Mouse Sensitivity settings on the lower left? play with it. Try ultra low and ultra high and then adjust it to where you like it best. As you get more confident and experienced, the higher sensitivity means faster action from smaller movements.

Remember, the Index foward button will be your mouse3 (or whatever) and be your teamspeak switch.

Best of luck and I hope this guide helped you all out.

So Simon, does this mean you want to fly the littlebird on Operation Harvest now and have me do the wrenching?

I've always wanted to fly. When I'm in with you, I'm taking more notes than you know. Average in air time when Cigar flys? 98% of overall game time. Average in air time when Simon flys? Well... I have the other 2% you're missing, but thats about it :) I'm an AA magnet still and do my flying offline as to not get my team killed and waste a chopper.

Thanks for taking the time to write this. I've had my x45 for about 18 months and it's just collecting dust. Maybe I'll be able to get my helicopter and aviator medals somehow
