Has anybody here played Planetside? It was (and still is I guess) the only lasting example of a persistent MMOFPS game with persistent worlds and battles for territory that go beyond "Winning a round" on a popular map. It has continents, different types of bases, infantry combat, aircraft, land vehicles, etc etc...
Your soldier gained ranks and certification points you could use to unlock different weapons...
There was character development whereby your character could gain command ranks and such... It was a cool concept that kept me hooked for nearly 2 years.
It was set in the distant future so the weapons tended toward the beams and lasers and it had cloaking suits and such... very exciting.
You paid something like $9.99/month to play it which covered SOE's expense of maintaining these huge servers and character storeage...
My point in all this is, would any of you support BF2142 or BF3 or whatever EA/Dice wanted to call it if it turned into a true MMOFPS.
The hook for me in this SOE game was the size of the battles. They made 64-player BF2 games look like skirmishes... Picture three hundred people from 3 factions fighting over a single continent...15 tanks roll over a hill and are attacked by 40 infantry and 10 aircraft....
Real "Battlefield" sized experiences.
Is the MMOFPS genre anything that will develop further? Would you pay $10 a month for that?
