no.... don't do that you wont score any points you will only get less... you score is you teams average score (2x if you win) so if you start killin' you team can kill less so get less points which means you will get less points...

Now now, someone with 921 posts here should know better than that.

However it's calculated, a commander can't get points for direct actions (supply drops, arty, orders...)

I.E Squad B is ordered to take Fish Factory - SL accepts order (pg up) and goes to take flag - squad members in cap zone get 4 points (neutralize assist - capture assist.) Commander then gets 2 (or is it 4) points for that squad capturing the flag he asked them to.

I am all for the commander sitting back - but in 16 - 32 player games a good commander can fight AND use the commander rose from the frontline quite effectively, and also makes for an extra effective man on the ground
        Ouch! How embarassing for you!

Do a little research and then come back and retract that statement.

In a big 64 player game, taking part in the fighting would be a bad idea. There would be too much happening for you to do both at the same time. You would be better commanding and maybes defending your assets.

32 players or less taking part in some fighting would be beneficial. When I command, I would normally defend a base and defend, take out enemy snipers and help the team if they run into trouble. There is usually plenty of time to do both.

as I mentioned b4 .... you score is the average score of your team... (2x winning) sooo does that mean i can say... WRONG!!!!

Nope, you have it right Gal.

Myself, I've found that the utility of being an active commander depends highly on the number of players going at it.

When the numbers are low, you really should try to be as active as possible. Your involvement (assuming you don't just get killed constantly) can make a big difference.

With higher numbers of players, it's simply impossible to be an active commander and still be totally efficent. Between running scans, dropping arty/supplies/cars, placing UAVs, and doing manual spots you simply don't have the time to be running around the map.

BTW, manual spots by the commander are totally underrated. They can help make a big difference. Usually I'll do a scan, drop a UAV over the higest density of enemy troops (or the most critical location), then zoom in on the second most busy area (or location where there's some sensitive activity going on) to do manual spotting. I've saved a lot of arses by spotting out enemy spec-ops trying to C4 tanks 'n stuff.

Sometimes you have to be an active commander. You get a team once in a while that likes to do nothing more than run around a flag that has already ben captured. Sometimes they will sit in a "safe" area and not move despite being given orders, a vehicle, supplies and a UAV that clearly shows a flag is clear for the capture. If I see people doing that, I usualiy start trying to cap flags and get some kills. It doesn't matter to me if they count or not.

Re: Is being an active commander useful?

As commander I just protect a spawn point. Normally it's my base of operations, but if I have one or two guaranteed engineers, I won't even repair the destroyed assets unless they are tied up and I really need the assets up immediately as opposed to taking points away from them and making them less reactive to repair requests in the future. I'll also mine the unmanned heave weapons in my area so that if someone comes to borrow one, they get a little extra bang for their bargain.

I believe the math on points for a commander is

(player point/number of players on team at time of made point)+... rounded up to the nearest point after overall totalling.

Kills from artillery do not count for score points but they do count for requirement points. If you need 10 kills as engineer for the basic badge and you kill 10 enemy troops with artillery as a commander/engineer, you will be awarded your basic engineer badge. Likewise for certain ribbon requirements such as air defense and ground defense. Rank doth have it's privileges after all I guess.

Command is not about doing and making the points yourself. It is about commanding and helping your side to overcome the enemy. Two great squads against each other is a good game. Destroying an excellent enemy squad through help from your commander via intelligence gathering and tactical artillery clean up strikes is a GREAT game.

Very true simon, but what do you do when you get stuck with 31 pudwhackers on your team that can't seem to find their ass with both hands? In that case it is not taking points away from anyone as they are not earning points to begin with.

Your best bet in that scenario is to just resign as commander and become a fighter.

                          No you didn't.
You don't get any kind of points other than command points while you are a commander.

All you did was waste a spot in the bomber that could have been occupied by someone else who would have gotten those points and thus increased your score.

Edit: and if these are your stats (http://bf2s.com/player/57960278/) you are full of poop. 99 X2 would have resulted in 198 points for the round. your best round score is 199 on Sharqi, which doesn't have a bomber and you haven't broken 100 on any other map.

Re: Is being an active commander useful?

I played BF2 for about 4 months before I tried my hand at commander. I guess I had assumed that someone else who outranked me, even though I was an E-7, would get it most times. Well, I was wrong. In 4 weeks I have been commander for 49 hours and have 7,015 points for that kit.

I was frankly losing interest for several reasons. On the bigger maps, I spent a good deal of time running around, because folks would jump in a vehicle and take off by themselves. I haven't mastered helicopters and jets, so it wasn't much fun. I enjoyed the 3 city maps, but wound up as a sniper using nades and clays a lot, and as support, chunking ammo.

Anyway, I enjoy being commander. Back to the original question, I have never tried to play the game on the ground level and command too. I have found that I am always doing something. I use the Scan and Arty options together. I always have the UAV just in front of the biggest battle area, and I drop supplies and vechicles constantly where the biggest battles are, even if there aren't any requests for them. I always zero in to ground level to see where they will go.

Most of the time, very few folks ask for specfic items, and it is usually the same ones over and over.

Also, the bigger maps, even with 64 players, do not give the commander much to do, with troops being spread out, Arty is generally ineffective.

I notice most of the mutiny against the commander votes very seldom get over 10 votes.

I also notice that no one seems to mind if I stay commander, until someone outranks me and takes over......

It would have taken me a long time to get to E-9 without being commander.

Bottom line, give it a try. If you need to get to the next rank, it is an enjoyable way to get a lot of points.

Well active commanding is more than likely gonna get you kicked anyway, at least in a vehicle of any kind short of a jeep.

16 player server, position yourself at mid field in a safe overlook to a flag with the right kit to do what's needed [ Spec ops, AT, Support.] A sniper cant stop a tank but AT will make em keep moving around.

32 + server then use the deep flag near your assets / armor.

In all cases unless your absolutely owning then play 100% commander always in the command screen. your job is to warn of anyone who slips through, pound the enemy with arty w/o killing your troops. Drop crates for armor and troops but in a safe place for them to get at them and then UAV the action zones. If someone gets through, light them up manually [learn how to do this !!!] get out of command and start slowing them down while waiting for reinforcements.

Get reasonably good and you'll get a good amount of gold/ silver/ bronze medals.
