Is being an active commander useful?

I am a long time chopper whore and currently got my expert chopper badge and now I'm out of badges to get for the chopper. I was debating becoming a jet/armor whore, but I think I want to try commanding.

I've done it a few times and I know what to do, but I usually end up scoring quite a bit less being commander than being infantry even with the 2x. Soooo would it be against commanding ethics to run around kill some people. duck into a croner to answer some supply drops...drop some arty...fire up the uav and then go on killing people. 75% of the times my squads don't do what i tell them too anyway. I'd stay away from tanks/air vehicles and kinda be commander on the front lines.

Does anyone do this and have success or is this frowned on by the general public?

    http://www.bf2s.com/player/45999199/ for reference :)

I'd frown abit lol only due to not knowing your capibility at either infantry or commander. If you didn't die, and still provided us with a decent commander. Then I would have no complaints at all.. But I'm not likely to complain in game anyway.

As commander I usually defend the bases, and repair things needed. You can see your tanks and APCs health bars for supply drops also. I usually get 4th - 1st as commander and I don't have to move much at all. Easy points

Please don't be an active commander on our server scarywoody. On small servers say 16 players then I think its fine on large server 32+ players commanders need to keep their head on the command screen for the whole round.

LOL at you thinking about being a jet whore. If you ain't flying a heli on our server your pestering me in a jet.

To answer your question even better. You won't score any higher being an active commander in fact you will score less because none of the points you make for kills or flags caps or assists will count. The commander score is based on the average team score x2 provided you win of course. So in actual fact by being an active commander you are only hurting your score not making it any better.

only way to command and fight is in emergency or too few players early in a map sequence
you CANNOT do the best job as commander if u r fighting
        u r hurting your team

This question has been asked since the role of commander was implimented in gaming. I think the best bet is to station yourself near an outside flag that doesnt get much attention, and recap the flag once someone comes out, captures, then leaves. Spend the rest of your time in the command window spotting and watching your guys. When I command theres not a single second where I could even afford to leave that screen. I really don't get how people think they're commanding well while fighting.

If you're going to try your hand at commander, just know that no matter how good you are, some dissapointed points whore is gonna try to mutiny you to get the place. Otherwise, if a commander knows what he's doing, why, and when, he's the greatest asset a team can have.

Not on our server, votes are turned off because they never work anyway.

In a 32vs32 situation, the commander should not be fighting except to save his own life or similar exceptions. The time is better spent leveraging the efforts of others rather than being an individual contributor. In a 10vs10 situation, the commander should be an active participant. You simply don't have the ripe artillery opportunities when enemies are that scarce.

I have an equal dislike for commanders that run off with the main battle tank in a 32vs32 situation as I do for those berating commanders that hop in an APC that no one else is using in a 10vs10 situation.

u do realise that commander points are actually the average of the total points on your team? so if your team has 11 players and 100points, u get 10 points... also, your kills dont count, your flag captures dont count, etc etc. in other words, no point goin to the frontlines becos u wont get any points, u jus deprive your team from getting those points which are your points.

The only time I play as an active commander is when my team is losing, and it is clear that if I don't cap some flags we are going to lose. Other than that, I don't think being an active commander is good for your team.

WRONG! i have no idea where you got that information but it is certainly not correct.

commander points are attained by squads carrying out orders given by the commander to take flags and by dropping artillery...

I.E Squad B is ordered to take Fish Factory - SL accepts order (pg up) and goes to take flag - squad members in cap zone get 4 points (neutralize assist - capture assist.) Commander then gets 2 (or is it 4) points for that squad capturing the flag he asked them to.

I am all for the commander sitting back - but in 16 - 32 player games a good commander can fight AND use the commander rose from the frontline quite effectively, and also makes for an extra effective man on the ground

You are the one thats wrong. This is taken straight from the bf2s wiki.

                          Commander Score

The commander score is the sum of all commander points earned. The commander points are every point earned by a member of your team during your reign as commander divided by the total of living team members at the given time. This is multiplied by two at the end of the round, when your team wins, and only if you are still active commander at the end of the round. Artillery kills or any personal achievement does not add up to this number. Personal achievements besides artillery kills are added to your points in the round, and count as combat or team points.

Oh yeah, Rambo, I'm sure you're going to save the round for your entire team.

I hate fighting commanders. I like servers that frown on such foolishness.
