That, to me is a good reason for open betas. Granted, this was probably a unicode vs UTF-8 issue, and if they fixed it for 1 unicode system, it should be fixed for all of the systems with wide character sets. Anyways, with 24 different builds of Windows XPP (in regards to languages), think of how many test cases there are in that alone.

When I have QA testing my stuff, I make sure that they do some basic tests every time, before they even test the functionality.

Using clean systems (EVERY TIME, NO EXCUSES): verify install, verify uninstall, verify upgrade, verify uninstall after upgrade.

Using typical consumer machine (OS with mfg installed software): verify install, uninstall, upgrade, uninstall after upgrade.

Install and run on every foreign OS that the software supports, to verify language files are correct.

Now, to test a game like BF2 with hundreds of thousands of players, all around the globe, using all different setups... realistically its impossible. Thats why beta testing is good. More of a test bed.

As i said before though, that doesnt mean the bug gets fixed. It might just get ignored. I would bet that your bug with unicode characters in the username was because the software was looking in the users folder, which had that char, and being non unicode, it treated it as garbage, so the path was wrong. Unfortunatly, the vast majority of users are not seeing that problem, and i would bet that this was infact brought up, and at some point a PM at some level said "this is a minor bug, and the people experiencing this bug are few and far between, so it can wait to be fixed".

As for the red tag bug, truthfully, that woudlnt be a critical to me. Its definity a high, and should be fixed, but would never stop a release. Its would have been listed as an anomily, and cant be reproduced every time, just hit or miss. It doesnt last forever, and while annoying, just not a show stopper. If there were no other critical bugs, it would get looked at, but it wouldnt take precidence over something like a server crash.

Bottom line is, if its beta tested, more critical issues may be found, and atleast have a chance to be fixed. Its only going to be good.

Now, someone else did bring up a valid point. There needs to be a channel setup for bug reports. Posting on a forum is okay, but, not gonna cut it. "When I am playing, sometimes i shoot at someone and it doesnt kill them , but not all the time" isnt going to be the most helpful bug report. There need to be a way to report bugs, and give as much detail as possible. A minidump if applicable, or some sort of tracelog would be the most helpful way for someone to submit an issue.

Re: EA wants your input re: open beta patch

I think it is a great idea to let us beta test the patch. I am fully behind this idea and we are the people who player the game online more times than E&A & Dice so we have a good chance to find any faults and errors that can be corrected so no one else will suffer. People who go on about this patch is rubbish and I can't get this that and the other so hear is your chance to find errors and stop b*ching on about the new up and coming patch :)

$keleor stop waffling you said "We the community are not going to find bugs that real beta testers have not already - how is that so hard to understand
I apologise if I'm not being swept up in this naive optimism but no amount of open betas will change a companies quality control - that is an internal issue.
DICE knew BF2 wasn't ready when it shipped.
DICE knew patch 1.3 had plenty of issues that would affect a large minority
DICE knew about the bugs we complained so bitterly about before we even saw them"

I bet you will be the first one to post a complaint about the new patch if it did not work this is what I am on about.

Shame why some of you out in the world don't read the message and start making up new subjects stick to this and maybe we will get somewhere and also maybe the admins of this forum can cut of the rubbish of the topic that do not stick to the subject in hand. RANT OVER

So what if we are beta testing the game I think it is GREAT :salute:

I like this idea. Anyone will be able to test it, and anyone testing it will know about the upcoming bugs. If DICE doesnt fix the ones everyone finds we will truley know they arent listening, this will just give us concrete proof that DICE is/isnt doing their jobs.

Re: EA wants your input re: open beta patch

The thing is we have been beta testing this game already from day 1. Now its just been made official.

The beta testers didn't sign off on the current version of 1.3 DICE made some changes then released 1.3 The server crashes weren't present in the version the beta testers tested.

Like others have said its not the testing. The beta testers find the majority of the problems but DICE/EA still ships it knowing its full of bugs. This is what has to change. Lets face it, this is the same business model EA have used for a long time. However I think they have finally woken up to the fact if they continue along this path its going to cost them big $$$. I know with patch 1.2 and 1.3, that alone made my mind up not to purchase EF and AF. I know alot of other people who didn't purchase them either because of the poor quality of patches.

If you look through the BF community throughout the world the over whelming majority said they aren't going to buy 2142 and go to Quake Wars instead. ID/Splash Damage/Activision are rubbing their hands together. They couldn't have possibly hoped for a better situation than patch 1.3 and a years worth of so called fixes. DICE/EA have failed miserably after 1 year they still can't get this game right and QW is going to be the big beneficary of this.

Something that has never been tested properly are the large size servers. 64 player maps with 64 players. If you check the test servers they are either 16 players or 32 players. It plainly obvious why the 64 player servers suffer the most because they haven't had adequate testing. The Open Betas could be a good thing in this regard, getting enough people on to test out the large servers but it still comes back to DICE/EA actually fixing the bugs that are found and not "knowingly" realising buggy code.

I'd like to point out to some of you who don't like the open beta test how poor EA's beta testing has been previously.

            Game: MVP Baseball 2004
Bug: You couldn't hit home runs left handed unless they were right down the line. The ball had an amazing amount of topspin on it, allowing it not to travel more than say 330 feet.

Now this would have been quite an easy bug to spot, if you played a game of it and tried hitting a home run with a lefty. But nope.. they didn't fix it.. nor do I know if they patched it.. i assume they did.. i got A patch.. but i dont know if it was made by EA..

I'm all for the public beta test.

your not listening to everyone's posts, its not the beta testers fault the game is being released with so and so bug, ITS d(EA)ice that is advocating the release of said product, they know there are bugs but they release the game anyway

48 posts besides mine and you want me to read all of em? :P

nah i actually read those, but i'm just not really believing some of it. I'm sure SOME of the bugs are a result of their betatesters not finding the bugs.

Back when I started buying EA Products in 1997, I never found errors. Everything seemed to work as it should. Since then, things have gone downhill.. Maybe it is on their stress to release things on a certain date.. maybe it's poor testing.. maybe they just dont give a crap once you buy it

It's not soley Dice's fault that the product is released in poor quality that is known ahead of time. EA sets the date that the patch is set to be released ahead of time and typically EA does not budge on this date. So if Dice's beta team finds major bugs ahead of time, but Dice's programmers do not have enough time to fix and test these bugs before EA's release date, the bugged code gets released anyway, to satisfy EA.

I agree that the developers should take most of the blame for this, but it's not as simple as that. It's really not as simple as I stated either.

Capt. HKS I am also one of the people who didn't purchase AF or EF. I didn't even buy SF because I was fed up with EA. I won't buy there expansions and boosters but I'm willing to give them one last chance. If they botch this I will not be buying another EA product console or pc again. My wife loves the sims I enjoy madden and have been buying madden and their other sports games since 97...EA was a brand name of quality in my eyes before bf2. Their support of bf2 really opened my eyes to how they operate and in return I will show them the same amount of support they showed me during my bf2 experience....none
as I said before I am in favor of this new route they want to take on bf2. we've already seen where closed beta has taken us...

I blame the both of them, EA for there unrealistic release schedule's and Dice for putting up with EA's crap for so long that the general quality of there product has dropped a substantial amount

EA need to have a beta testing team - whether it be members of the public or not - It doesn't matter - I can bet you this would work more efficiently than asking the public to do so. Perhaps EA should have an online form in which you can sign up to the beta testing, providing you have a decent sort of "resumé". I don't know - Maybe I'm typing this idea in the hope of EA reading this and taking it into consideration, but what can I say - What can one person do ?

I've beta tested software before (even my own) - It's practically testing and actually attempting to break it. Some programmers used to hate me because they hadn't put a maximum limit of characters on a certain textbox for example - which would end up in an overload.

That is a bad, bad idea. This beta should be --->OPEN<---. No resume, no interview, no email confirmation- just OPEN!

They need as many people who are willing to do this without limiting their numbers.

I'd wager that not everybody really wants to participate in any form of beta.
I'm sure as long as they run two patches concurrently then most will pick the stable version.

I won't send them an resume. But I will install the betas and play on beta servers and report back debug logs, messages, etc. if there aren't any locked doors.

I think Open Beta Tests are good. Granted they should have their Closed Beta Test for their in-house testers first before releasing to the general public, but notwithstanding, its a move in the right direction.

I just hope that they actually listen to our input prior to the release of the patch if there is a serious problem that the community identified.

Bad idea; all it will do is delay the release - and then give EA/DICE an excuse about why they are delaying. Some of the bugs that have gotten through previous closed testing periods are impossible not to have noticed; this means that EA/DICE ignores the input from their testers.
