bf2voicesetup.exe crashes

[I tried posting this once before and I must have forgot to hit send or something....I'll try again...]

Like many of you, I can't get VOIP to properly work with my mic/sound card. Unlike most of you, my problem extends to the bf2voicesetup.exe utility actually crashing. The crash occurs if I select "Save settings" from the bf2voicesetup.exe screen.

An extensive google search found two other people mentioning this problem but no clear solution. I think many people who don't see their mic detected in bf2voicesetup.exe may also see the program crash if they tried "Save settings".

The crash is a typical Windows crash:

"BF2VoiceSetup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close..."

As far as what I've done to try to solve the problem:

1) I've updated BF2, my audio drivers, and directx to the latest.
2) I've uninstalled and re-installed BF2 (3 times).
3) I've set acceleration to "basic".
4) I've enabled the mic, used a different mic jack, etc.
5) I've tested my mic in sound recorder and in the "Test Hardware" section of the "Sound and Audio Device" utility in the control panel. It works in both those cases.

Since bf2voicesetup.exe is actually crashing when I select "Save settings", I feel like this is not as simple as a muted mic or wrong jack.

My system:
PC: HP Pavillion d4100y
CPU: 2.8Ghz D920
Memory: 1Gbyte
Video: Radeon x1600xt
Audio: Onboard Realtek ALC882 with 5.10.00.5229 drivers.

Thanks for any help anybody can give. I'd really like to at least try the VOIP feature.

p.s. Does this really even matter? Are most servers set up wrong for VOIP anyway? Is there any activity on voice for a non-clan member like me or do informal squads just make do without it?

Try this:

1.Go to the "My Documents\Battlefield 2" folder.
2. Look for a .con file with the title "BattleCommoDefaultUserSettings".
3. If that file is not there create a new file in notepad and save it as "BattleCommoDefaultUserSettings.con"
4. Go into the file and type the following: (Make sure each number has its own line)

5. Save the file.
6. Give it a shot in-game.

Thanks a bunch! Your fix didn't really make any difference, but it gave me something more to try and I ended up figuring out my problem (sort of).

I still can't run bf2voicesetup.exe, but I can use VOIP in the game! The key was to turn the transmit threshhold down to 0%. Not 10% or 5% or even 1%. It has to be at 0% or I can yell as loud as I want and never transmit.

I'm not sure if this is the way it's been since my first install or if somethng I did along the way actually helped. At any rate, once I turn the threshhold down to 0%, the VOIP works great. I just tried it in a game and I can't wait to try it with a full squad.

So, if I was going to add anything to the list of things for people to try to get VOIP to work, I'd add:

1) Don't worry if bf2voicesetup.exe won't detect your mic or if it crashes.
2) Make sure (in addition to everything else you've tried) that you try turning the transmit threshhold in the game options to 0%.

By the way, Tren, I did have a BattleCommoDefaultUserSettings.con file in my My Documents/Battlefield2/Profiles directory, but it was blank. I added the lines you told me to add and then tried it. It worked, but only after I had turned the transmit threshhold down. Then, out of curriousity, I went and made the file blank again and everything worked the same way.

Just for future reference, what was it that I specified in the file? I see that that file gets blanked again if I try to run bf2voicesetup.exe, so I assume that these are threshhold and gain settings?

This is exactly my situation. bf2voicesetup has never saved without crashing and I also had to set the threshold to 0% to get VOIP to work after one of the patches. This is with Sigmatel 9750 C-Major integrated audio on a notebook which I suspect is part of the problem.

Thanks for the tips. I was having the same problem. Everything worked fine for a year now and then all of a sudden no one could hear me.

Turning down the threshold worked great.

Ahhh, thank you good sir, you have fixed my problem as well! I use SigmaTel drivers on my laptop and have this issue. Thanks a bunch! Now, if I can figure out how to make the "Boost Mic Again" box clickable...
