    Joystick & Mouse Look

I haven't got a joystick yet so if you use a joystick to fly a jet, please solve a puzzle for me :)

Do you use the mouse look function when flying a jet? If yes, how do you do it?

Is it to push or pull your joystick in a certain direction while pressing and holding the Left Control key?

    Thanks.

If you hold control while you are flying you can look around. I wouldn't recommend it, though. Use the views (drop cam, rear view) when you're flying instead. You lose control of the plane while you're mouse looking.

But if the enemy jet you're dogfighting with is at your 9 or 3 o'clock and 100 metres away, then you can't see him by using any of the views (default keys F10, F11, F12). There are also many other positions of the enemy jet relative to you which are blind spots in these views, but not if you mouse look.

I would venture that most (if not all) of the really good pilots don't use mouse look since it's too cumbersome and makes you take your hands off the controls to use it.

by the time you use your mouse look to look at your 9 or 3 oclock position he wont be there anymore.

Yeah, I understand that. Then what do you do if the enemy jet you're chasing goes out of your screen when you're in cockpit view and moreover you still cannot see him in any other views. Does that mean you've lost him and he's escaped?

Open your Battlefield 2 profile folder in your MY DOCUMENTS folder. Open a profile. Usually marked with numbers. In there, you can find a file named CONTROLS.CON. Open that file (with notepad). Scroll down till you see "AIRCONTROLS..." and paste these 2 lines into there.

                  ControlMap.addAxisToAxisMapping c_PIMouseLookX IDFGameController_0 IDAxis_0 0 0
                  ControlMap.addAxisToAxisMapping c_PIMouseLookY IDFGameController_0 IDAxis_1 0 0

Do the same with helicopters controls.

This basically makes your joystick act as a mouse, and you can use mouselook while holding CTRL.

As for statement that best pilots dont use mouselook- thats is wrong.

With mouselook you will lose control over the craft, its not advised to use it in dogfights, but rather in scouting for targets. If you lose enemy jet, use outside view, either rear chase or free cam, and follow the contrails.

                    Re: Joystick & Mouse Look

I don't use mouselook while flying jets often...I have JoyToKey set to also give me camera control via the hatswitch so I'll switch camera views 'on the fly' (pardon the pun).

I DO use mouselook via hatswitch while flying helicopters quite a bit. If I know I'll be flying on a straight path, I'll mouselook all around for potential targets for my VOIP squad gunner without losing speed, vector, or velocity.

And like anything...you get good at what you know and practice.

Also important is the timing. Use F12 whenever you turn since you'll likely be turning to follow your target and it'll let you see where he went. Just keep practicing in F12 mode and you'll get good at flying your plane RC-style.

People who use joysticks never use mouse look? That's a good question, since I use the mouse and I am always using mouse look to check for boggies. But I also use the other views by hitting C to cycle through my views. In a laggy server this can be deadly lol.
