Teamwork and having fun in BF2

Recently I have been reading a lot of posts complaining about a lack of teamwork in BF2, and for the most part I agree. I got this game the day it came out and I played in the beta as well. I got bored about 2 months after I started playing. I would run around by myself or even in a squad and no one would work together and no one was on mic. I almost stopped playing, but I came up with a solution - at least for myself.

    1. I learn to squad lead. I won’t bore you with my opinions on how to SL as there are many posts with good recommendations. (If you want to see something scary, take a look at my stats and the number of hours I have as SL.) You will probably not get as many kills/points as SL, but it will be more fun in the end.

    2. Make sure your mic is working. It is very hard to type orders and a decent headset with a mic is only $25.

Eventually, (if you play on the same few servers most of the time) you will run across some players that follow orders, stay with you and have mics. If you are a decent SL and your orders make sense, they will join your squad every round that you create one. After you play with that person for a couple of days, exchange Xfire account names. For those of you who do not know what Xfire is, you can do a search on these forums and there is a lot of information about it. Basically, it allows you to find friends that are playing and join their BF2 server without them having to give you an IP address. Once you have their Xfire name, you can find them in any server. I tend to pick other ground-pounders, because I think that is the most fun.

After a few weeks of doing this, I had a good squad of “regulars” that I always played with. When they joined the server, I made room for them in my squad and told the players that I kicked “thank you for playing in my squad, but I have to make room for a regular. If you see room the next round, please try joining again.” /kick. I NEVER picked a player because he was really good. I picked players that played as a team. Although, I have noticed that their stats have gotten much better since we started playing together (but so have mine). We have great medics, AT and support guys.

Some of you may think, “Hey that sounds like a clan.” Well, to me a clan implies practices and matches and whatnot, and I am just not into that sort of stuff.

Now, when I play, I always have a full squad of people I know, and on Fridays/Saturdays we have two or even three. One thing that is nice about consistently playing with the same players is that no matter how good you are, there is someone who knows something about the game that you do not. I learn new things all the time from the people I play with. There are little tricks that only players who play many hours with a certain kit know. I just recently discovered that the “TV missile” in the bomber is automatically guided once you get lock. I am sure that anyone who spends time in the jets would know that, but since I am never in one, I had no idea. Another thing is you will develop your own lingo. We have names for almost every strategy we use. Example: Trojan Horse is where 4-5 of the 6 man squad attack or defend a base that I deem less important, and the SL (and maybe a medic) sneaks into a different base to cap it. Once the SL is in position, the other players spawn on him as they die. This prevents the entire squad from getting wiped out by arty or a tank on the way to take a flag instead of just one person. So, I will say something like, “Attack the train station and I will Trojan Horse into the Gatehouse.” It’s fun because everyone knows what I am talking about now. BTW, Wiggan<NuG> came up with the name for that strategy, not me. I have to give credit where credit is due.

I DO have one advantage that many of you probably don’t have. I have a very fast connection that allows me to set up and maintain a separate TeamSpeak server so that I can talk to multiple squads at one time and we can joke around between rounds. When I play with a person long enough, I create a TS account for them which makes in game communication even easier. Currently I have 41 accounts, but only about 25 are actually used regularly.

These are just my opinions, but I hope it helps some of you. You might even try giving each other your Xfire names in a forum post so that you can find like minded players.

    Thank you for reading,

I know what you mean. I did basically the same thing you did, only we had a 50 man ventrillo server when the game came out. I will check the server, and when my guys get on (others play WoW, Cs, etc) we'll meet up and go full carnage. Tactics and strategies that you employ are common to most good squads, and it IS important to know that there's always something to learn - even at 300 hours in, I still find tricks/tips and new places/routes because my guys tell me about them. Team work in BF2 exists only when you let go of thinking that you're the best, you know the most, and you HAVE to control where everyone goes all the time. You have to build up trust and have fun while doing it.

While it is frustrating to no end having a full squad of people and no one bothers working as a team, but you have to expect it. Not everyone has a mic, not all servers have VOIP, not all players like using the mic, etc. I do notice that you have some good tips though. Especially the "Trojan Horse", I find that works well with the medic sneaking away in a jeep is the way to go.

A clan is just a group of friends that plays online games together, usually as a team. The teamwork is implied and is a given. Competition is optional though, I know of several casual clans that do not compete in TWL or CAL or anything else.

As for you "advantage", a lot of people do use ventrilo and TS. It does not work well if you are alone in a pub full of people you have never met. I think good teamwork comes in when you play with your clan/friends/pub regulars that you know.

Man, I really hear what you are saying.

I started playing with a group of friends, but sadly we just never could work together as a squad. I put a lot of time into trying to learn what to do as a squad leader, but I just couldn't get some of the other players to follow orders. They kept going off doing their own thing.

I would LOVE to play in a good squad. Unfortunately I don't play regularly enough for most people that have squads. Team play is the whole reason I play BF2. Sadly it is really hard to find good team play these days....

When school is done (friday), I may try to catch you sometime and play in your squad if you have an opening. If nothing else, I'd like to see your style of squad leadering and maybe learn a bit from you.

        Thanks for the great post.

I would highly suggest to anyone wanting great teamwork try visiting the tacticalgamer.com servers. Here is the main server where you'll find most people at: 64.34.161.157.

Be advised you must join a squad or you'll be kicked from the server. Everyone has voip and teamwork/tactics are implemented. If you want something different than public servers then it would be in your best interest to check it out.

            :salute:

Excellent post. The teamwork is what makes this game fun for a lot of people. It's even better when a bunch of those people find others like them to play with.

NICE POST! and from popping in and out of "Ranked" servers, I know there are a lot of people looking for that kind of gameplay. Stop playing like a headless chicken and start looking for good servers (such as tacticalgamer.com)/clans that promote teamplay. IMO, it is the best way to play and it makes the 20X more fun.

tacticalgamer.com has always had a very good reputation, at least here on the forums, but don't they only run unranked servers?

And to quell the forthcoming flames, no, it's not the points I care about; it's the unlocks. :p (To each their own, of course, but for me, the standard guns just feel weak and inaccurate after using my G36C/G36E/PKM for almost a year now. :p)

Unranked servers have global unlocks, you should know this after a year....:p
If you cant own with the regular weapons, I doubt unlocks will help you out.

As my reply implied, I don't play on unranked servers, so how would I know that, Einstein?

                      .
                      Not anymore

I couldn't tell you one unlock from another. I almost never play ranked servers and after playing 46 hours over the past 12 months on ranked servers I couldn't even tell you which ones I selected, since I never use them.
And I play 2-5 hours every night, just not on ranked servers.

Tactical Gamer didn't have unlocks the times I've played on it.

Interestingly enough, I have been having very good luck with teamplay recently.

I never play unless I am playing with at least one of my friends and we are on vent with each other. This alone makes BF2 much more enjoyable. We both play medics and basically just try to keep each other alive while we move from base to base.

However, ever since the patch (and I have no idea why, maybe it has more to do with servers) but I have had many people join our squad and stick with us.

Numerous times I have been able to be an actual SL and sit back and spot with my support gun while the rest of the people run in and cap the base.

You are right, my points go down, but it is totally worth it to know that your squad was the squad that really caused the downfall of the other side.

                              good point zuch
I love joining a server and sqaudding with my mates and seeing us change the course of a battle by working together and capping flags. A good organized squad can make the difference in a close game. Using voip (vent) for our team and squad speak for those that might join us, we call out what kit we're coming in with, ask SL what he needs and where we should go, then we go do it. Its the main reason I stayed after 1.3 - hanging with my bros, drinking a beer and raging whatever map comes up.
BF2 and another gig of ram = $150
                              Headset mic = $25
Full squad of bros w/ voip = priceless.
