I don't know why somone hasn't made one yet. I mean, wouldn't it be fun say on the battlefield back in 1775, hundreds of british soldiers and american soldiers on screen, you've got your gun. You can hear the drums, see the flags. The officer(?) yells '' get ready '' '' aim '' Everyone in your row pulls up their gun, '' fire! '' Hundreds of shots, smoke fills the area, quickly everyone around you (including you) is reloading while the british across the field fire upon you. People are falling and dying around you in your line. Luckily, you arn't shot. '' Fix bayonets '' And then you charge across the field to meet the british, while artillery is comming down. You make it to the british, you thrust the end of your rifle into the enemy, then fire.. ahh now that's the game i'd make. Or how about the same idea with the civil war? Bull run anyone? gettysburg? Wouldn't you guys play somthing like this?

Re: Revolution / Civil war.. FPS?
I particpated in Living History and have stood line of battle for what we do to give people a chance to understand a little bit of History.
1- You WILL NEVER get public gamers to stand line of battle and make a massed volley firing as one unit against the enemy.
2- The woods and fields will be FULL of hopping bunnies while everyone whores the artillery with the double canister. (Think two coffee cans full of .57 caliber lead balls or bigger Minies)
3- You cannot get enough people into one server to replicate anything bigger than company sized battles (One Company in the Civil War = around 30 men while a divsion around 3000 and a Corps 4-6 divisions)
You probably can find some mods being worked on that have Civil War or Revolutionary War technology and warfighting, but I feel these would be best used if a sufficient number of players assemble in one server; with the players who understand and are willing to play the game in the spirit it was designed.
It is very slow with lots of walking and waiting for the opponets to get in range and sometimes pretty intense with hand to hand (Rocks, Musket butts, knives, fists, feet and maybe an occasional pick.)
There are all kinds of ways to kill an opponet in those wars and they had Snipers (Who were really treated badly because they hide and shoot Officers.. something not considered honorable war in those days) And Grenadiers. Those were the best folks in any army but had to get close enough to light a ball full of boom and throw it. Everyone hated the Grenadiers (Same as we hate the Noob Tubers eh?) And there is the Artillery. I dont think they will allow a video game to be sold that where children will see a double line of soldiers disappear in a mist of red and body parts.
And finally the Skirmishers. A small group of death wishers to stand in front of a very large army moving against them to slow them down and give thier own army a chance to form into line of battle and load. (Up to 30 seconds for a 1863 Springfield)
Firing a Confederate .57 Enfield at a human 300 yards away probably will kill that Human. Maybe not right away but probably within a week from infection as hospitals were nothing more than cut off the limb (Bone shattered etc) and wait to see if you live or die.
But in a BF2 type game? Sorry it wont work.Comment

Hmm i was more so talking about a singleplayer game, i know nobody is going to actually stand in line and wait to get shot, but i'm thinking if it's singelplayer and took some skill to aim (the gun moving around and such) it might actually work.Comment

Re: Revolution / Civil war.. FPS?
there is Battlegrounds 1 and 2 for Steam which is a half life(2) mod.
other than that it would only really work for single player, and even then not so much. its just not a good subject for games. trust me, play the battlegrounds and you will understand why
A. no one has made a real civil / revolutionary war game
B. no one plays the battlegrounds.Comment

If I remember the drill one hand goes into the trigger area clear of the percussion (Or flash pan) and the forward hand holds the gun in front of the Trigger assembly near the center of gravity. Accuracy while standing up depends on range. Obviously if you had a log or tree to use as a sort of a bench to fire from you will be much more accurate.Originally posted by alecs36Hmm i was more so talking about a singleplayer game, i know nobody is going to actually stand in line and wait to get shot, but i'm thinking if it's singelplayer and took some skill to aim (the gun moving around and such) it might actually work.
Military firepower in the Revolutionary war and Civil War depends on tightly grouped ranked soldiers to deliver massed firepower against the enemy line.
With the invention and use of the Gatling gun the use of the old line of battle tatics were deemed too dangerous. But I believe the old Von Stuben's Manual of Drill still exist in our military today since he brought it to Valley Forge.
I dont think that aiming and shooting any kind of weapon will change much in single player, you would zoom into the sight and click your mouse.
The interesting part is when you fire the smoke covers your view and you might have to actually wait a few seconds (Yer reloading anyway) before the smoke clears enough to see the result.Comment

Re: Revolution / Civil war.. FPS?
Here's the way I see it:
You get into battle formation, the officer yells get ready, aim, fire. Smoke fills the air, you hold R for 20 seconds to reload your rifle. By then half line was killed by Brit fire. You attempt to fire again at their commander, but miss because of the poor accuracy and quality of your Brown Bess rifle. By this time the Brits are ready to shoot again. If regular rifle fire doesn't kill you, a sharpshooter or cannon fire just might. I guess it would be cool to make a bf version, but there would be many problems:
-No body would want to stand in a line easy for the killing
-There would be only assualt(Brown Bess) sharpshooter(improved Brown Bess) medic(no weapon) support(gatling gun) engineer(Brown Bess, hammer) no spec ops or anti tank
-A good trained soldier could get off close to 2 shots a minute
-Accuracy of rifles was bad
The reason there are so many WWII, Vietnam, and modern war games is because they are different time periods with interesting things. There were no tanks, planes, helos, arty, or auto rifles in 1756!!Comment
