Managed to get stability after 1.3
Having searched the web and spent hours-up-on-hours finding the problem with instability for this wretched game, I think...Big think...I have found the main issue that others will feel too.
As well as the IRQ sharing issue, which I think I have circumvented, I have discovered for some video cards allowing fast writes causes jitter, crash to Windows, and crash to BIOS.
I would recommend to anyone with any sign of instability the first thing to do is the following:
Go to BIOS and switch off fast writes. For me this was not posible as my BIOS did not have a setting on fastwrites. If not like me, and in my case I have a Winfast NVIDIA 6600 GT, go the web and find a copy of Riva Tuner (it's free) and install it. This tool will let you set your NVIDA card more than the standard drivers will. Once installed find fast writes and switch to off.
As a secondary point...Uninstall the game using the reg-edit from EAGames. and deleting the root of BF2 (if any one wants a copy post me and I'll arange a copy). And reinstall with the sinlge 1.03 patch as released from EA.
Finally, if you have a Pentium 4 like me, don't change the affinity to single processor. You need both threads working otherwise big jitter. You could set the priority to realtime though...I have found this can help if you're pushing your graphics setting higher then you should. ATI don't do this as it can cause problems.
