BF2 won't start

I used to play bf2 alot. had special forces expansion. I played up thru patch 1.20. then took a several month break.

I tired to connect today and when I click on the shortcut or the .exe file...the optical drive spins install disc 1, the little BF2 logo comes up, then nothing. nothing happens in the task manager either.....

I tried to install all patches incrementally up to 1.30. no change. I uninstalled everything exept my profiles, then reinstalled bf2, followed by the complete 1.30 patch. same thing. click on program, spin disk spin, BF2 doesn't start. No error message, nothing.

Anyone have any idea what is going on, or what I need to do to get into bf2.

yes you have to clean the registry keys out when re-installing or it doesn't work, gimme a sec I will find the link.

Have you done a manual uninstall? Check your device manager and make sure you cd-rom drive working. Can you run other disc's in the drive? Have you tried starting the game with the special forces disc?

Try the Manual Uninstall if you havent already

You can manually uninstall the game by removing the files and registry keys associated with it. Be sure to follow these steps exactly as they appear to prevent accidental file/program deletion on your system.

To delete the save files:

1. Open My Documents.
2. Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.

To delete the game files (in the default location):

1. Open My Computer.
2. Open the C drive.
3. Open the Program Files folder.
4. Open the EA GAMES folder.
5. Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.
6. Close all open windows.
7. Right-click on the Recycle Bin and choose Empty Recycle Bin.

To edit the registry and remove Battlefield 2:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on Run.
3. Type regedit in the text field.
4. Click File and then choose Export.
5. Name the file Backup and make sure the Export Range is set to All.
6. Click Save; you will now be returned to the Registry Editor window.
7. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
8. Click the plus sign next to Software.
9. Click the plus sign next to DICE.
10. Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.
11. Right-click on the Battlefield 2: Special Forces folder and choose Delete.
12. Click the plus sign next to Electronic Arts.
13. Click the plus sign next to EA Games.
14. Right-click and choose Delete on the Battlefield 2 folder.
15. Right-click and choose Delete on the Battlefield 2: Special Forces folder.
16. Click the plus sign next to Microsoft.
17. Click the plus sign next to Windows.
18. Click the plus sign next to CurrentVersion.
19. Click the plus sign next to Uninstall.
20. Right-click on the key named {04858915-9F49-4B2A-AED4-DC49A7DE6A7B} and choose Delete.
21. Right-click on the key named {50D4CB89-AF34-4978-96DC-C3034062E901}and choose Delete
22. A Confirm Key Delete window will appear, choose Yes.
23. Close the WindowsRegistry Editor.

Battlefield 2: Special Forces is now completely removed from your system.

Reinstall Battlefield 2.

Its disk 1 of the 3 that come with bf2 that needs to be in the dirve and it is. That being said I have attempted the same with all of the bf2 and spec ops disks.

I will first try to make a mini-image of the disk to see if that works.....but my trail version of alcohol 120% has already expired...so I amy need to find a hacked one or buy it....... if that fails I will do a full uninstall again. I would like to save my profile files however.

The other times you uninstalled and installed, did you save your profiles and copy them back again too?

If so try NOT doing that and use the Retrieve Account option in BF2 logon screen. This way you will have your old BF2 logon, but with default video, audion and keys.

If you keep copying them in after reinstalling, it doesn't do any good to reinstall, if the problem lies in your profiles on the harddrive.

Also if you tried to make it work with a no cd of the Bf2.exe, and you patch, then the game won't start, as the patch only patches original bf2.exe file.

Not sure what you mean here. I will try not saving my profiles (but having a backup of them on my other hard drive). and a registry clean.

Tried the minimage...no dice. that is just with a fresh install pre-patch.

It was just in case you tried a ***** thingy that replaces your bf2.exe file. A mini image is the way to go, as it changes no files of your Bf2 installation.

Regarding profiles if you copied them in, just move them again and start the game, no reason to try yet another reinstall.

the profiles thing did it. I got into the game finally. Now to update thepatch and woohoo.
