Re: gaining rank
It's all 'bout getting points.

Re: gaining rank
Points are what really count towards rank progression.
The real key lies in performing the role(s) of the specific kit; i.e. if you're playing as Medic, you heal your team members, dispense med kits, revive soldiers who have been hit, etc.. or if you're Spec Ops, go behind enemy lines to destroy radar, artillery, UAV controllers, and so on. Also, playing as the Ground Commander and leading your team to victory will earn you a nice point score.
It is no doubt a very slow road to promotion if you play as lone-wolf, and rely just on kills alone to gain global point progression; I know this first hand.

Re: gaining rank
ya, playing sniper really is not the way to go to earn points. Chances are you wont earn very many at all, even if you are a good sniper you will not be in the top bunch. Just go as a kit that really helps your team, join a squad and stick with them as they capture flags and so forth, you'll get your points and ranks will come in time

Re: gaining rank
yeah, check out this site: www.formitron.com
punch in your BF2 ID and then move your mouse cursor over the various ribbons and medals to see what the requirements are to earn each one.
and yeah, the Sniper probably has the hardest job when it comes to earning points in a given round; pretty much you're objective is to take out enemy infantry in small, calculated numbers.. you've got to play as Sniper because you enjoy it, not for score and rank advancement.

Re: gaining rank
If you wanna get the advanced ranks , badges matter.
But if you just wanna simpyl rank up , just get points. If you become a great and i mean great sniper you can manage 70 points per round which is pretty good for a Sniper. If you have managed 40 kills in one round with Sniper im pretty sure you could get up the ranks just as fast as medics etc. would.
But if you are going to be impatient just be a Support or Medic.

Re: gaining rank
I've gone from Private to 1st LT. in a bit over six months. I did it playing all the kits, but mainly specops. Killing yes, but mainly capping flags.

Re: gaining rank
I had about 120 Hours and 9,000 points when i was strictly Sniper and Assault but when you are Medic and you become good at you just go through the ranks. Im on 280 Hours with 28,000 points , it is a bit too late for me as i only got good at this freaking game when i reached 100 hours or so but if i learned fast i would be a Lieutenant by now.
Medic is not allways the way for points though , but im just teh sex at it
