You need to poke around in all the zip files you get with BF2. I'm not at home at the moment so I can't tell you exactly where to look but, if I remember rightly, there are files called things like client.zip, etc.

Unzip these (especially the one called something like client) and there are all the pics in there you need. There are all the HUD, game and minimap images that bf2 uses. You'll need to convert some of them using a DDS converter (Google for DDS Converter 2) to view and edit them.

Not sure, never tried it. I've only used the images for my apps and web sites. However, I would strongly suspect that if you edit them then it'll be picked up as modified client files and you'll be booted so I wouldn't try it.
