basic/advanced guide to AA by sithdemon

    For mobile AA:

    A) go engie, since your going to be drawing all kinds of heat, your going to be banged up, so go engie. The only other kit worth going is support for the ammo, but a supply drop or a ammo bags are easy to find, so engie is best IMO. Also if you happen to be a squad leader, try to get a supply guy to ride with you, alot of these rules go out the window in this situation, you can really be agressive, firing 4 at every target, sometimes with out a lock, cause it dosen't matter it's just another reload, might as well do it every time. Also if your on voice, and REALLY want to focus on the sky, have the person riding with you tell you where to go, if your about to run into anything, turn a certain way down a path, and you can esentially never take your eyes off the sky, heck sometimes they'll see planes from the opposite direction that your looking at.

    B) try to be behind a freindly armour column, these days I'm more worried about AT, tanks, jihad jeeps and APCs. Being behind a freindly armour column gives you in mobile AA, another advantage. when a plane sees the armour column, it should almost immediatley go to bomb it, meaning that it'll angle down, release it's bombs and pull up. with that happening, you should hopefully be able to take advantage of this act, and be able to get your missles off no problem, never mind the fact that you should be able to predicit it's flight path, and rough it up with the guns as well. Should the plane play smart, and go over the armour column and sees you, and takes you first, well your in a pickle, but it's basicly your job to draw it's attention, at that point, play more to live, then to kill the plane, this is to give your own armour the chance to move up and take territory.

    C) there are various spots on the maps that are great "camping spots" for AA, once your set up try to get a supply crate for your self, so you might want to be a squad leader, or talk to your own. once your nestled in, keep scanning the skies, and watch for spots, if you have to move a bit to get a lock or a good shot with the cannon you should be okay to do that, just beaware of whats around you once you move. Some spots have shelters, or various debris or structures that will block bombs, so what you want to do is drive out from that spot, and when the plane/chopper comes at you, you can jsut drive forward into the protected area, with out having to take your eyes off the sky.

    D) get used to driving with out looking at the ground, keep your eyes up, drop it down if you hit a tree or are getting attacked, but generally move in straight lines so you don't have to look down, unless it's to kill infantry/jeeps.

    E) use your flak cannon to get away from APCs/tanks, and if friendly armour is already working on it, help them out, being hit by flak makes targeting in armour or anything alot harder, since AA has no smoke use the flak as it's substitute.

    F) while the camp spots are great, don't stay in the same one all round, like a smart sniper, move from spot to spot. or mess with the planes mind, and hop out of the mobile AA and put it in cover so the plane dosen't see the AA at all. after a couple passes, it'll probably assume you've moved on or are dead, and it'll probably go over the area again with out worrying about you.

    G) don't be afraid if a plane or chopper or plane is comming right at you. it's hard, but if they are comming right at you, you need to move side to side relative to their path. and keep the flak going all the time to screw up their aim, perhaps fire some missles dumb fire to make em sweat, but save a couple for if you survive and them drop em once they've past.

    F) Bombers, and choppers, attack and transport, are your easy air kills. fighters are hard to take down, but it's do able and if you don't destroy them you should be able to damage them a decent amount, which helps your team by forcing them to go repair, and your own planes to finish them off a little easier.

    For Stingers:

Don't just sit in the stinger, since you can't win most head on fights, and you'll probably get shot by armour or infantry before you do. stay around it, and since the range has been reduced you need to jump in and get those missles off quick as it flies off, which means you need to jack up your sensitivity so you can whip it around in time to get a shot or two off in time.

    For the carrier AA:

    A) there are TWO of them on most maps, use them in tanddem, and the carrier is practicly impervious to planes, unless there are 2 uber pilots, and take out both in one sweep.

    B) when a plane is comming at you, don't bother with the missles, unless you want to give em a scare, but mostly its a waste, save them for if you survive and launch them as the plane flys away. rely on your gun when a plane is comming at you (for choppers, just unload everything as soon as you see it, just save some missles), and KEEP IT WARMED UP. you have a couples seconds before the planes guns rips through you, however, your guns are stronger, so if you pick it up on targeting, or its guns give away it's position, you can take it out of the sky easily enough, or atleast make it break it's attack, which means it might be vulnerable to your missles. If you warm up your guns once you see it, you might as well get out of the AA, save your team a ticket.

    C) if your a engie, and the AA has been destoryed, DO NOT REPAIR IT back, wait for it to respawn, since it comes back at full health it's much better. Bringing it back at a touch of health, means that if a plane comes by and nicks it, with you beside it, you'll die easily enough, heck even a AT, or APC missle round can take it out at that point. If it's low on armour, like in the red, repair it, but try to get someone decent at AA, to man it for the short time your repairing. Hopefully they are nice enough to give it back.

    For All.

    A) Range has been reduced, but as long as you get the missle off in time the plane/chopper can leave range as long as that missle is locked and going it'll track for a good long time.

    B) Try to be on voip with your planes, there's nothing better then a enemy plane tailing your planes, and yours flies to you, and you take out the enemy plane, allowing your own plane to go repair. especially now with 1.3 now that you basicly can't hit friendly with lock on weapons, this has never been easier.

    C) Again jack up sensitivity this helps with the swing around if you've survived being bombed, and the plane/chopper is flying away.

AAers are less abundant, and even AA whores like my self have a fair bit less practice then dedicated pilots. however once you get the hang of it, ANY AA peice is effective, and will atleast keep planes busy, if not get you some sweet kills.

Share the joy of dropping j-10s from the sky.

I advise to talk to your commander to drop 2-3 supply crates to the Essex gun, if youre manning the Essex. Its reload capability is amazing, you can literally shoot the missiles continously, until teh supply crates drop. Plus the repair power of 3 supply crates is amazing.

3 supply crates will reload the missiles faster than you can shoot. Thats what I meant.

          A world-class guide by a world-class AA-whore. Just two tiny points I feel I should mention:

Flak may disrupt the vision of land vehicles, but it won't work on jets (choppers I'm not sure about). 99% of the flak that hits a jet will not be seen by the pilot, as it will hit the body of the plane, not anywhere near his point of view (sometimes it can actually be quite difficult for pilots to tell if they've even been hit by flak at all when it's combined with missiles). BTW, when you press F9 and turn off the cockpit on all air vehicles, it actually moves your point of view to the exterior of the canopy, so he's even less likely to see it in this case. This is a minor point to be sure (as you're going to want to keep shooting the flak regardless), but just thought you should know.

It's actually not a waste--you have a pretty good chance of hitting him head-on if you aim it right (I do it air-to-air all the time, and have done it in AA, too). Just aim slightly above the target, fire at medium-close range, and just don't bother with more than 2-3 missiles. You actually have an added advantage in this situation, as his flares are more likely to fail since they will drop behind him--the missiles have a chance of connecting even if the lock is broken, simply because the plane is between them and the flare. Aiming slightly above the target helps with this by sending the missile into the plane's flightpath (you're essentially leading with it, as you would with a gun).

For fighters yes it dosen't screw up their aim, however for a bombadier, and a chopper gunner, if you hit it in the right place it will sort of screw up their vision, more so with a bombarier, since the TV missle will just go through it in the first second. This is more true with non US AA, since they have a high rate of fire, and thus produce alot of flak.

For vanilla I'd recommned especially with fighters to not bother shooting them head on, unless you've seen them drop flares. In my experience the missles will sometimes pass them and then try to turn around and the track them, giving up alot of distance. In my experience it's always worked best just after they've bombed you and are flying away.

when using the linebacker or mec/pla version after each attack be it plane or heli allways make sure u have 4 missiles

if u only have 1 left just fire into the ground because 1 missile wont help at all unless it a well damaged plane or heli

Ahhh I totally forgot about that, thank man!

The only case where it's good to have less is if your down to 1 full round, and have 2 left is fine. It just means you have to wait for the flare drop, otherwise you waste them, and have to wait for reload.

if you have 3 or 2 left in general just keep em, unless you actually get a suplly drop, or supply packs. You go through the missles quickly, so if you don't have the commander in your hands, you need to conserve, because whats worse is being TOTALLY out of missles, which can happen quite quickly. You wanna keep enough to keep moving and keep air targets atleast afraid and dodging em. It means less points for you, but you keep the air targets away from your own guys.

If it comes down to it, and your close to the AA respawn, just destroy it if your totally out of missles. Being in a land vehicle that deal with things in the air, it means targets are regularly above you anyways. So it's not like your even going to miss that much time in the fight, and being totally out of missles makes you not much more then a large, slow, APC turret. And you really don't need that. And if your a engie, run back and put down some mines in the base while your at it.

You're not listening to me, Mr. Counterpoint. As I said, aim above the target, so the missile leads into their flightpath, and you will hit them--flare or no flare. I don't spend much time in AA, yet when I do hop into one, it works quite frequently.

I am listening to you, and I though I was being clear when I said, for vanilla especially with fighters. It works well in AF, and on a bomber it can work, but as you know hit box detection, is not perfect, and generally when a plane is comming to bomb you, chances are your not going to see it much before the bombing run, so getting a full lock is harder. In vanilla it's always worked better for me if I save the missles for after the pass. If I see the plane from far enough out, and it does lock, sure I'll fire one or two if there wasn't a flare drop.

Small mobile update, engie squad leader + support rearming and navigating the land = aggressive AA.

yeah ive found the best combo team for linebackers is have 2 of them 1 eng and the other support, stay within 20-30meters of each other and u cant go wrong.
also linbacker V's tank takes 50 shots to the tracks (approx)
A10 and other AF planes seem to only take 3 hits
worst enemy is LGM from bombers and a good solo heli pilot

IMO, its better to be support when your in mobile AA. Running out of missiles is the worst thing that can happend to you
