    Who's actually practicing on AA?

I've seen less plane whoring complaint threads, other complaints, but less plane ones. are people actually finally practicing on AA, or the opposite and have just given up (foolishly) on taking out planes with them?

If you want some tips and tricks for both AA, heres a collection of some of the tips I've given out in other threads. Other tips are appreciated.

Share the joys of dropping j-10s from the sky.

I'm unknownsoldiers buddy, the AA whore umungst other things. Here are some tips and tricks that I gave out in another thread.

"Again this is true most of the time because there are next to no decent AAers, and before 1.2 AA basicly didn't exist, for planes atleast. Pilots have got years of various flying games under their belt, AA is a little different, and takes some getting used to. And please don't belive that jets ALWAYS win, jets occasionaly miss with bombs and guns, especially against mobile. stingers are screwed because every player knows where every stinger site is on every map.

Boots- My tips are as follows. for mobile AA, A) go engie, since your going to be drawing all kinds of heat, your going to be banged up, so go engie, the only other kit worth going is support for the ammo, but a supply drop or a ammo bags are easy to find, so engie is best. B) try to be behind a freindly armour column, like I said before, these days I'm more worried about AT, tank jihad jeeps and APCs. C) there are various spots on the maps that are great "camping spots" for AA, once your set up try to get a supply crate for your self, so you might want to be a squad leader. once our nestled in, keep scanning the skies, and watch for spots, if you have to move a bit to get a lock or a good shot with the cannon you should be okay to do that, just beaware of whats around you once you move. Some spots have shelters, or various debris or structures that will block bombs, so what you want to do is drive out from that spot, and when the plane/chopper comes at you, you can jsut drive forward into the protected area, with out having to take your eyes off the sky. D) get used to driving with out looking at the ground, keep your eyes up, drop it down if you hit a tree or are getting attacked, but generally move in straight lines so you don't have to look down, unless it's to kill infantry/jeeps. E) use your flak cannon to get away from APCs/tanks, and if friendly armour is already working on it, help them out, being hit by flak makes targeting in armour or anything alot harder, since AA has no smoke use the flak as it's substitute. F) while the camp spots are great, don't stay in the same one all round, like a smart sniper, move from spot to spot. or mess with the planes mind, and hop out of the mobile AA and put it in cover so the plane dosen't see the AA at all. after a couple passes, it'll probably assume you've moved on or are dead, and it'll probably go over the area again with out worrying about you. G) don't be afraid if a plane or chopper or plane is comming right at you. it's hard, but if they are comming right at you, you need to move side to side relative to their path. and keep the flak going all the time to screw up their aim, perhaps fire some missles dumb fire to make em sweat, but save a couple for if you survive and them drop em once they've past. F) Bombers, and choppers, attack and transport, are your easy air kills. fighters are hard to take down, but it's do able and if you don't destroy them you should be able to damage them a decent amount, which helps your team by forcing them to go repair, and your own planes to finish them off a little easier.

for Stingers, don't just sit in the stinger, since you can't win most head on fights, and you'll probably get shot by armour or infantry before you do. stay around it, and since the range has been reduced you need to jump in and get those missles off quick as it flies off, which means you need to jack up your sensitivity so you can whip it around in time to get a shot or two off in time.

For both. A) range has been reduced, but as long as you get the missle off in time the plane/chopper can leave range as long as that missle is locked and going it'll track for a good long time. B) try to be on voip with your planes, there's nothing better then a enemy plane tailing your planes, and yours flies to you, and you take out the enemy plane, allowing your own plane to go repair. especially now with 1.3 now that you basicly can't hit friendly with lock on weapons, this has never been easier. C) again jack up sensitivity this helps with the swing around if you've survived being bombed, and the plane/chopper is flying away.

    D) practice practice, AAers are behind on it, thats why they get owned so easily by planes."

my ratio is a little under 3/1, but even on rough rounds it stays up around 1/1. some of that is infantry or transport choppers. however many attack choppers and bombers have been shot down. Fighters are tough, but again do able, especially if you know that they are comming into your area. It's a bit of a thankless job, but it can make all the difference for your team, I personally love it because there aren't that many AA whore still, though I see more and more, not hitting friendlies as much with 1.3 has helpt that alot. Plus theres nothing like taking out a j-10 in mobile or in a stinger (rare but it happens), knowing your working from a disadvantage and overcomming it.

here's another tip. well something else I realized. Being behind a freindly armour column gives you in mobile AA, another advantage. when a plane sees the armour column, it should almost immediatley go to bomb it, meaning that it'll angle down, release it's bombs and pull up. with that happening, you should hopefully be able to take advantage of this act, and be able to get your missles off no problem, never mind the fact that you should be able to predicit it's flight path, and rough it up with the guns as well.

Should the plane play smart, and go over the armour column and sees you, and takes you first, well your in a pickle, but it's basicly your job to draw it's attention, at that point, play more to live, then to kill the plane, this is to give your own armour the chance to move up and take territory.

in addition, for the carrier AA. First there are TWO of them on most maps, use them in tanddem, and the carrier is practicly impervious to planes, unless there are 2 uber pilots, and take out both in one sweep. First when a plane is comming at you, don't bother with the missles, unless you want to give em a scare, but mostly its a waste, save them for if you survive and launch them as the plane flys away. rely on your gun when something is comming at you, and KEEP IT WARMED UP. you have a couples seconds before the planes guns rips through you, however, your guns are stronger, so if you pick it up on targeting, or its guns give away it's position, you can take it out of the sky easily enough, or atleast make it break it's attack, which means it might be vulnerable to your missles. If you warm up your guns once you see it, you might as well get out of the AA, save your team a ticket. also if your a engie, and the AA has been destoryed, DO NOT REPAIR IT back, wait for it to repawn, since it comes back at full health it's much better. bring it back at a touch of health, means that if a plane comes by and nicks it, with you beside it, you'll die easily enough, heck even a AT, or APC missle round can take it out at that point.

As always AAers are less abundant, and even AA whores like my self have a fair bit less practice then dedicated pilots. however once you get the hang of it, ANY AA peice is effective, and will atleast keep planes busy, if not get you some sweet kills.

Yea, I hate people who complain about planes (except the jsf vs j10 argument because i deffinately agree it isnt balanced). I mean come on, hop into the AA and take em out. Its not hard. You just need to wait for them to drop their flares and then you fire. Simple as that. I can take out 80% of the pilots this way.

Well I can only concur and I have to admit that I was wrong. Some time in the past I have been complaining about the J10, but I was wrong. Lately I have been using the plane when it was possible.

You know how hard it is to get a plane with all those ppl waiting on a plane
Its all about the right doing the right thing, at the right moment when in a plane. Throttle down, hard right or hard left and use your afterburner and get in behind your enemy.

And I am one of those who uses the AA and I get alot more kills with it post 1.3. Some of those things mentioned I use myself and they work. What I just hate is that a plane in bomb mode, spots you sooner than you spots him/her. Or a chopper.

Re: Who's actually practicing on AA?

You know, I drove the AA when the game started and when no one wanted it. I knew the missiles were crap, ate the teamkills and learned to master it way back in the beginning. It quickly sorted out the pilots from the wanna bes when I was in a game server manning the AA.

When patch 1.2 came out I was in Airdefense heaven. Sure the pilots screamed. But the volume really got loud when they tried to beat me down with both planes at the same engagement and I was running mentally from one shoot down to the next in the very few seconds that the attacking planes were in range.

When patch 1.3 came out I stayed out of the AA for a while then got back into it. The Euro Maps Quarry maps with the Tungsuka (An old favorite) is one of my favorite ways to play AA now. I like to sorta hide behind a hill keeping the Anti tankers (Who like to chew on the soft AA now) out of sight and ambush the enemy jets.

The only problem I have with this is when in a server with good players who has a commander who seeks me out and assigns his pilot to specifically bomb me into oblivion. I am learning to watch for it and try to move fast if caught sitting still. If I was moving and that X starts to BEEP BEEP BEEP, I would change direction at least 90 degrees and keep moving.

If I see him first I usually wait until they have flared. When they flare then I can fire on them. While waiting I like to give them a little gun action to inflict enough damage to ensure one of my two missiles fired will kill them.

I play as a support for mobile AA so I can reload them. For fixed AA I am an engineer so i can fix them.

I find fixed gun emplacements increasing risky because the pilots can find the lock on box, engage with the guns (That are accurate and kill fast at a very long range) and destroy you before you can get out of the emplacement.

Or.. worse.. Kill you before you make the visual sighting of the inbound enemy plane. Dont bother trying to lock on because at those long gun ranges yer dead anyhow.

The only thing I would like to see is more dangerous AA units with longer visual/lock on ranges or even radar acquistion of inbound enemies. This is to balance out the improving pilot's skills in the guns department as it is the best way to kill a stinger mount. I know this because I fly as a pilot and would use the guns instead of wasting bombs on them.

Keeping the airdefense updated and credible threats will maintain a balance.

                  Great AA guide.

Another thing that you should add is when you predict that a bomber or fighter is coming to your area soon and got you as primary objective and you are in a wide open area as mobile AA, just wait for him out of the vehicle to make you invisible in his HUD then get in again when he is at your lock-on range and take him down.

Naw I'm not that good a commander, I'm a good squadleader, and a good squaddie. I do spend alot of time talking to the commanders though, which helps me do my thing on the feild. mad respect to helpful commander, especially the ones using voice.

For all those that I see have taken up AA, I'm glad there are others out there, making the game more balanced for everyone. Heck there are even some pilots that LIKE AA to be used. My buddy unknownsoldier is one of them, because it means you have to be on your toes, where as pre-1.2 your only worry was another plane, but most planes then were just interested in bombing ground units for easy points. now planes can still get mad points, but only if they play smart, and play to live, instead of just going for easy kills.

For those complaining about the length of the OP, well if alot of those things were talked about on the forums, I wouldn't have to make it so long. Alot of the things I learnt even from release most people haven't had a chance to learn, even now. I know your mostly joking, but it's gotta be long, so that others willing to take up the AA have the best chance at using it properly.

Those who don't know how to use the AA cares. Those who are new to BF2 and if you don't care and you don't have anything constructive to add. Plz do not post that you don't care. Makes you look like a smacktard.
