My understanding is a Driver Special Abiltiy is when one of your passengers earns a Heal/Repair/Supply point.

A Driver Kill assist is when one of your passengers gets kills someone. Additionally, you'll get a Driver Kill Assist if one of your passengers kills an enemy.
