Hey I've been working on a P-51D Mustang to practice making more "complex" objects and I'm coming along pretty good but I just can't decide how to go about modeling the cockpit. How have other people gone about modeling cockpits? Showing pictures would help a bunch too, thanks!

Re: Modeling an Aircraft Cockpit
hello ive been modeling aircraft ever since the first microsoft flight simulator came out. And a very good start would be to get pictures of the cockpit itself. First you want the basic structure of the cockpit and insterment panel to look simulare to the real deal. I dont know if you are texturing the cockpit as well, or just modeling.. but a good place to start is this webpage.. http://uscockpits.com/M-R.html
there is a few P-51's on that page to give you a good look. If you texturing the model as well, its good to know what each instrument is on the panel, so you can do a google image search for a simular more closer instrument. For example, the P-51 has an altimeter on the uper left side. IF you were making the texture for it you could do an google image search for altimeter and you will have a few good choices of which one to use, and you can copy resize and paste on your texture. Same goes for the automatic direction finder, speed indicator, and horizon indicator, as well as oil pressure, heading, clock, compass, and other buttons and switches and gauges...
now if you are modeling the panel, it might be cool to make a few simple cylinders or cubes and color them to make them look like tiny switches, but the more geometry you add the more lag you could add to the game... simple is better.
anyway.. i dont know much more to say about it.. i guess. keep practicing and try to find all the pictures you can...Comment
