Re: Ps3
is that a lot?
Its $500-600 in the states. That is only $50 more than a xbox 360 since you have to paid $50 to play games online[live]. PLus you get a blu-ray player. I mean i just spent over $500 for a video card for my PC that just about equals the gpu in the PS3. It crazy how much power they have in that thing.
Sony is really biulding a console for the hardcore gamer. Tons of features, most powerful, and STANDARD hdd. MS really messed up when they didn't go with a standard HDD.Comment

Re: Ps3
yeah that is a good plan if you are low on cash. By then the price will come way down and tons of great games will be out.Originally posted by sarbPS3 looks totally awesome, but the price is WAAY too high. i dont see myself getting one until a few years in....plus, ver1 consoles are always buggy as hell, better to just wait anyways.
But i can't wait for Nov!Comment

Re: Ps3
I disagree. Give the customer a choice. What? Are you going to want the blue-ray player for blue-ray movies? And what if blue ray fails? Honestly it doesn't make any difference to me, if i want to watch movies in HD with my 360 i'll just buy the HD-dvd add on for it. Choice. I thought MS messed up with putting out 2 different versions of the system, owait sony you did that toOriginally posted by <kb>smokeris that a lot?

Oh, maybe you didn't know but ALL PS3 games are using blu-ray disc.Originally posted by alecs36I disagree. Give the customer a choice. What? here is what the devs say about blu-ray
Squaresoft
Toriyama and Versus producer Shinji Hashimoto defended the decision to release FFXIII on the PS3. According to Hashimoto, the development staff determined that one DVD would not be enough for the type of visual expression they were attempting to make. Toriyama noted that, regarding visual expression, the PS3's shader abilities are a big factor.
Ubisoft
OPM: How's your experience with the storage media of the PS3, the HDD and the BluRay disc? And do you have any comparable experience with HD-DVD technology?
M.M.: Our focus is 100% BluRay, so I cannot compare with HD-DVD. I can only say that the new BluRay disc format is truly awesome. The capacity is immense, and the Data Transfer Rate is way beyond what we are used to. And that's really important, because Data Streaming (OPMED: where the console constantly loads new data from disc) is truly the only way to push next-gen games to the limit. The Playstation 3 HDD is something that we have so far given less attention to, because it hasn't been certain all that long yet that it will be standard on every console. Decreasing load-times by copying a part of the game to the HDD is one possibility, though it doesn't matter all that much for a streaming game like ours. But there are tons of other applications, such as the possibility to as it were record your whole game, to be able to watch a replay of it later on. We intend to use the HD optimally, but how, I can't tell yet currently.
"The Darkness" developer:
"The 360 is a fantastic machine. I really really like it. The only thing, you know, that is going to cause trouble is the amount of storage space available on a DVD... thats really a problem."
Team Ninja
"The infamous Team Ninja front man has a thing or two to say about Microsoft's decision to assign standard DVD format to the Xbox 360. Limiting his development team to a measly 9GB does not sit well with Itagaki, especially when Team Ninja is looking to include any number of (MS-coveted) HD cut scenes. It's ironic that Microsoft has been the most outspoken about the "HD era", but is the least prepared for it… However, don't be surprised to see an Xbox 360.1 springing up in a year or two, complete with HD-DVD drive."
Last year, interview with Famitisu magainze, Itagaki explained his frustration with MS going with standard DVD format instead of going with HD-DVD. Since Japaneese developers love working on games in CG, now Itagaki san will face even more great challenge with xbox 360, or he can just switch over.

"The developer of "Enchant Arms,"
"The developer of "Enchant Arms," an upcoming role-playing game in Japan, told Gamespot.com last year it was hoping to be able to fit the game on two discs, but admitted "that's even looking grim." Any old school gamer can tell you that switching discs while playing is not a fun experience."

Vivendi Universal
"The technical requirement for game development today demands more advanced optical-disc technologies," said Michael Heilmann, chief technology officer for Vivendi Universal.
"Blu-ray offers the capacity, performance and high-speed internet connectivity to take us into the future of gaming."
EA
"EA, a leading games developer and publisher, added that the delivery of high-definition games of the future was vital and Blu-ray had the capacity, functionality and interactivity needed for the kinds of projects it was planning."

Q: Will the graphics improve from F1 05?
A: We try hard every year to improve where neccessary, but as I said before, the PS2 is running on it’s limits with the 22 cars. Graphically it is similar to F105, although we believe that the driving experience is much more rewarding with the new kerbing and the new phyiscs. The PS3, though, is something else! That machine is a Beast! We are adding an enormous amount of graphic detail to absolutely everything. To give you some idea about detail levels, one car in the PS3 game takes up the same amount of memory as all 22 cars in the PS2 version!! That’s a 22 fold increase! You can damage the sidepods on the PS3 cars and see in side the car and it has radiators and exhaust pipes and everything. It’s awesome. Gameplay-wise the PS3 also allows us to use much more accuarate collision models. In a PS2, the car has an invisible ”box” that detects collisions all the way around the car, but in the PS3, there is no single box – you can get the wheels interlocked with the other cars.

Well i want to ask something if i may.Do you guys use/plan to use the extra space the blu-ray provides, for the benefit of the game,or its just to early for that yet?

Sorry Arfi - let's see if we can't get you a decent answer....
"Yes!"
There you go
Seriously though the game is gonna need a whole lot of data for all the levels and characters that we are planning. At Sony's presentation on Monday last week they had a slide showing that the storage medium for a console is usually 100 times the size of the consoles main RAM - the point being that a DVD wouldn't be able to hold enough data for a AAA quality game. So yes, we'll definitely be needing the space that's available on the BD!

Unreal Tournament was 6GB compressed. Next Generation games are going to be 20GB plus, and how we're going to fit them on DVD9's I don't know, they'll probably be a few of them. On the PS3, we're going to be using the majority of the space on those Blu-ray disks. So, online isn't really the best option in some instances.Downloading 30Gb isn't really feasible. What online could be, is the back-channel to get additional content. Patches and things like that. I think what Valve has done is great. It'll be interesting to see where marketing fits in. Now they're going with EA in the future, the biggest publisher of all. You can't do one without the other, otherwise no-one knows about your game. Unless you have the huge marketing budgets that major retailers have when launching your game, so I think there's still a very important role for retailers.
For even more ownage here is an article about blu ray movies that already require and use 50gb discs
Oh about MS giving the consumer the choice. What about the dev who HAVE to code their game like the HDD isn't there? That is a split user-based. PS3 does not have to worry about that b/c EVERY PS3 will have a HDD in the system.

Re: Ps3
It wasn't not known that the PS3's blue ray disks can hold more, and considering you took all that effort for no reason, mainly because i wasn't even talking about it, is kind of sad. But if you're on the subject of wich is better, how much will the 'better' blue-ray disks cost? $80? If it does end up that high, how many people will go ps3? I'll tell you, about none. With a $600 price tag for the ps3 itself (the prem), how can you justify an $80 game, trying to sell it? The general gamer just won't shell out that much for a playstation 3. I've bought 3 games on my 360, wich brings my cost up to $580. If i was trying to do the same on the ps3, i'd have a cost of (assuming the games are $80) $920. Well, you may say '' but we don't know if they're going to be $80 or not '' Ok, so $60. $780. Still, much more than the 360. The ps3 will alwase cost more, and that's why i believe if a customer looks at the 360 and Wii's pricing, they won't move to the ps3. Oh, and the whole '' $50 more '' was complete BS, if you even looked at the ratio to the amount of xbox's sold and live subscriptions you'd know that not everyone had live, maybe not even half. So not everyone is going to subscribe. You also don't factor the $600 'prem' ps3. It's $100-200 more for a ps3. Period.
Cell processing, hard to develop for? Maybe. A developer you may know named John Carmack has said publicly that
Heres a video of him exlplaining it:the Xbox 360 has the best architecture and development tools so the game devs can do their jobs better. In contrast he thinks the PS3 will be harder to develop for with inital games being disappointing as a result
I want a games machine. Not a ps3 with a blue ray drive they forced down my throat. And in november, if i want a ps3, i want some of the GOOD games! Heavenly sword isn't making launch, MGS4 isn't making launch, killzone 2 isn't making launch, UT 2007 isn't making launch. Resistance fall of man really isn't anything special, i remember seeing an interview and they were asked (the developers) what made this game stand out from the rest, and he paused to think for a second before anwering, rofl. All i can honestly say the ps3 has going for it is Warhawk and assasins creed (wich is said to be comming out on the 360 aswell). Oh, and eight days was ALL CG. More cg from sony, yay! Wheres killzone? rofl.
Atleast i know with the 360 there is plenty of 3rd party support and many games. Gears of war, Halo 3, mass effect, GTA 4, F.e.a.r., MotoGP 06, too human, chromehounds, table tennis, test drive unlimited, lost planet, ninety-nine nights, Fable 2, Forza 2, saint's row, Prey, huxley, shadowrun, those of wich are just some of the most anticapated games on the 360, that you won't find on the ps3. These of wich have nothing to do with the games that LAUNCHED with the 360, GRAW, Cod2, kameo, Oblivion released a little after, PGR3, need for speed most wanted, perfect dark zero, hitman released a little after, the outfit, bf2: mc, full auto, burnout.. there are just so many more great games on the 360 than the ps3. Mainly because many PC developers and other 3rd party developers are finding it easy to develop for the 360, and porting seems to be easy aswell.
The ps3 is a media machine. Not a 'hardcore' system. It forces you blue-ray and is $100-200 more in cost, even more if the blue-ray disks do end up raising the cost (since they are more).
And do you think blue-ray seems to be making any real difference right now in game storage?
So far 360 games are looking just as good or better..
Gears of war:
Resistance:
Halo 3:
MGS4:
Oh, and if you've seen the halo 3 announcement trailer, all of what's in that trailer is running real-time and your character could walk over anywhere you saw. (Bungie has said this in there new video 'behind the scenes' watch it, it's great) It's that vast, and they still fit it on an '' OLD DVD '' disk with an amazing graphics engine, plenty of characters, objects, and they're still adding more.
Heres a pic of what i'm talking about:
Oh man poor us with our old dvd players...
Overall:
The xbox360 delivers everything the ps3 can, high definition, amazing graphics, vast open areas, a variety of games (well, nvm the ps3 doesn't deliver that), downloadable content, all for $100-200 less.Comment
