First, I would suggest leaving it on Hardware mode, but in your Windows device settings, dial back hardware acceleration from the maximum. I used to get stuttering in Hardware mode w/ maximum HW accel, but the problem went away when I set the acceleration slider at about halfway. For me, the sound quality is better in Hardware than in Software mode.
Of course, if that doesn't help, then you should try Software mode.
