*Steam / Battlenet / WoW menus and interfaces have us spoiled.*
"I would play BF2 if it was a Steam game" was the last response I got from a friend I tried to introduce to BF2.
I know it's petty, I know it's not the main core game, but it's really bad, and really off-putting. I can actually empathise with them for giving up on BF2 before really even playing it.
DICE / EA, I REALLY, REALLY don't think the core gameplay issues are that bad, although I have yet to try 1.3. Just fix the menu/server browser. It will make the whole BF2 "experience" a lot less frustrating. For me, it should be your number one patch priority.

Blatently copy Steam style menu's / game browsers if you have to. And ntegrate it so you can make small patches to everyones machines without making us download a 300meg point release every 4 months, please.
