patch first or install EF first?

I did a reformat of hard disk, installed BF2, patched it with 1.3, then installed EF. Went to go play, and everytime right before I join a game, error came up that said:

"server doesnt allow modified content. Please revert back to official blah blah blah"

No problem. So now I just reinstalled BF2, and decided to install EF first. But when I try it says you must have 1.2 or later.

I had EF installed fine before when I did incremental patch updates. Should I install 1.3 first again and hope for the best, or install 1.2 and then do the increments and then install EF?

Install BF2, then v1.3 full, then EF. If you still have problems, re-install v1.3 full again afterwards.
