Idea: Why doesn't the USS Essex, or any main base, have Ground-to-air Radar?

Now here me out. What if each main base had a radar dish that basically had a UAV, but ONLY air vehicles in a 400 meter radius?

This Radar Dish can be locked on with Air-to-ground missle (bomber), and will show up with a square for pilots.

Now what if in the commander screen and people in AA vehicles could get this "feed". So people in any AA gun and the commander see air targets within 400 meters of their main base until the Radar dish is destroyed.

Instead of adding a new vehicle why not connect this 'feed' on the existing Scanner?

The reason why 400 is because the range of a T.V. guided missile is 350m.

    What do you think?

Element of suprise. In reality you can fly low enough, or high enough to advoid radar detection anyway. Who needs radar anyway just scan the air for a lock!

IMHO nothing in the game balance is more screwed than AA. In real life the MINIMUM range for the AA type missiles (Tunguska etc) is 2.5km, thats over 5 times their MAXIMUM range in BF2!

In BF2 the maximum range for lock is 350m, and in RL its 40km, with effective missile range of 8km. In BF2 the effective range is 0 to 500 or so.

Before you say it's not a sim, I know, this is about imbalance.

Compare those figures to say AT. In RL effective AT range is 50 to 600m, and in BF2 effective range is 500m. So thats about right, where's the balance? Obviously AT is going to be more effective than AA at doing it's job right there.

Furthermore why should flares be reasonably effective against AA, when smoke screens aren't any use against AT which are presumably IR or optically guided?

And then again choppers and jets have rearm / repair pads, but nothing else does.... WTF? Surely the fact that airfields are isolated would compensate for the inconvenience of having to land in order to repair / rearm.

Little wonder we see pilots at the end of the round with 70 to 1 kill ratios.

Obviously Lasse hasnt flown anything yet and still has to work on some facts.

The real life ranges your referring to is using BVR (Beyond Visual Range) Mode with missles such as the AIM-120, the way I've always understood is that BF2 imitates the AIM-9 Sidewinder missle with a visual range of about 3nm (I think). Which is still further than BF2 missles.

I see where Harmor is going with this. An Aircraft Carrier does have built in radar for the purpose of tracking incoming bogies. I agree that this would be a cool addition but I don't think that a MOB should have it however.

the AA in DC for 1942 had something like it, that once you got on it, you could see all air activity within a certain range.

It could be made to only be visible by those that are manning the Phalanx.

That's the idea. Only for those that are in the AA themselves for main bases.

Armor and Infantry get supply crates, engineers, and medics, of which the crate can be put down anywhere. Jets cannot take advantage of any of those, and helos only to a limited extent. However I'd gladly land to rearm and repair if you give up the supply crates and head back to your uncappable to rearm and repair armor on a pad a la BF42 and DC. That or rely on an engy, and we know how many of those actively do their class justice.

However on topic, I agree all AA should have an "aerial UAV" on them, similar to the new AF scout helos that are portable UAV scans, but can only detect aircraft and have like 50% more sweep than the standard uav. It must be a possible to do, I mean its been added to a helo ffs.

It's totally idiotic the way jets and helos are repaired.
Especially the jets; how the hell you rearm a FLYING jet?

They should be forced to land to repair and rearm. This would slow them down a bit, and make it easier to sabotage the airstrip (and kill the pilots) and also make them easier targets.

Not really necessary. When im in the phalanx i have been killing two J10s for every death lately, the only time i lose is when im taken by surprise. If i could always see them coming it just wouldnt be fair on the jet pilots.

Check my "Guide to the Essex" for tips on how own with the Phalanx even without radar.

The best balancing that EA could do is to increase the phalanxs armor by around 25%.

Come on, any reasonably skilled pilot can easily kill the Essex before you have time to say "****"! When I solo the AC and go to the carrier, the first thing I do is shoot the Phalanx before I can get shot by it.

well its pretty much even if both of you start getting hits at the same time, if the pilot misses a few bullets and the aa guy doesnt, then the jet will get nailed.
25% extra would pretty much mean death........ :p
