Unknown Soldier, if Im not mistaken its basically the same as barrel roll, however, instead of using the "right/correct" key for yaw, you use the opposite, thus creating a "retarded" roll.

        Re: Aerial Combat Tips

The problem with most people is they think that aerial maneuvers are supposed to be used when an enemy fast-mover is on your six, WRONG! In real life and in this game if you wait till you get locked on to start evading you're dead, period. Spotting the enemy and making sure they don't spot you is an essential part of flying both IRL and in-game and can give you a HUGE advantage. He who spots first, kills first. You should always be aware of the enemy position by using two simple tools, the external views, and your mini-map.

Checking external views regularely will let you watch your back and hopefully make it so that you can keep a safe distance from the enemy, you should know how long ago the planes have been shot down, the spawn times of each plane, checking map for spotted symbols, uavs, and when the enemy plane gets a kill your soldier will disapear off the map somewhere giving you a general idea of where he is.

In the event that you do get someone on your tail, switch to rear views and wait till they fire to shoot flares. If you are out of flares or there are only 1-2 missiles being fired and you feel you can dodge them, go into a tight turn (plane perp to the ground and pulling hard on the stick) and stay that way until the missile is right about to hit you, at which moment you change directions of the tight turn by rolling left or right quickly then pulling up again. This is easiest to do the the Euro, J10, and F18, in that order but it can also work in Migs and the F35s and even bombers. However in these aircraft you have to be much more precise with timing.

You should always assume the enemy fighter has 6 missiles unless you've seen him just fire them on another target and you should count the missiles being fired at yourself. After you feel the enemy has fun out of missiles the immediate danger is over, however if it is a decent pilot he will know how to use the guns. In this case if you feel you can out-maneuver the enemy do so and either get on his 6 or break off. If you are having a hard time losing the enemy (say its a J10 and you're in a F35 or worse) simply turn hard and spiral slowly upwards until you get to the height limit, then throttle down and wait to drop back into the atmosphere where you can break off or try to re-engage. This is a very risky maneuver when the enemy still has missiles in their inventory as they will get/break the lock several times before you reach the alt limit. However if you know they are out of missiles it is the best thing to do as the enemy pilot will never get a good firing position for their machine guns and once you reach the alt limit there is nothing you can do.

Edit - And also remember that simply maneuvers are the best. When flying you should never be thinking of what maneuver you're pulling off, you need to use instinct to fly. If you're going through a maneuver and its not working at all, why finish it? You must be innovative and quick thinking to out-maneuver the enemy, as all pilots will know these basic text-book maneuvers and ways of contering them.

          Re: Aerial Combat Tips

Text book ACM......NEVER! trade speed for height when tailed. Energy is your friend.

LOW YO-YO: (safe altitude) roll 15-25 degrees through inverted and pull hard on the stick, as you lose altitude, roll out 15-25dg`s through level, keep pullin, kick in full rudder, roll inverted again and repeat. After two or three yo-yo`s, If your in chase view, you should see him overshoot you.roll out, pull up, (or break off if your not in a position to fight) or switch to aims, lock, wait for the flares....fox 1-2.

HIGH YO-YO: (too low)Same as above, instead of heading toward the farm, head for the heavens, Keep your plane of maneuver shallow, as in..... dont over do it by pulling straight up(certain death) stay relatively flat, and try to convert altitude into speed as much as you can by gaining abit more height every time you point the nose up, but remember the longer you fly straight n level the longer he has to gain firing position.....

THE SCISSOR`S: When there`s a bug on your tail, Break 90 degrees from direction , when you think your out of his hud view, roll back 90 degrees in the opposite direction all the while pulling hard on the stick, again, when you think your outasight, roll her back the other way, by this time(unless he`s an ace) you should have turned him inside out........ giving YOU options.

MISSILE LOCK: 1Bravo has said what i would`ve said except, when breaking 90 degrees to the missiles, roll a tad past 90, maybe 100 degrees......release the flares above you.

There are heaps more ACM. Once in the knowledge bank, can combine 4-6 moves into one fluent orgy of flight........

AH Ok thanks dude. I'll try that out.

LOL -- IS there anything worse? Aside from presenting a larger profile, I honestly think you're better off in a bomber, since the F35 is such a missile-magnet (anyone know why that is exactly?). Excellent post, BTW.

Actually that really depends on the performance characteristics of your plane vs his. If yours has a better climb rate, then you may want to take advantage of that. In BF2 the trade-off between airspeed and altitude doesn't work the same as in real life, so the closest analogy would be an F-35 going high with the afterburner.

Soldier, if you would see the hitbox mesh on F35B, and combie it with the relatively big turn radius, you wouldnt be surprised.

Basically the only thing that is worse is the F15, losing an enemy is a nightmare in that thing.

Yeah guess it does, but if he`s on your six, and you pull up.......your target area has just tripled, giving an easy cannon shot, or Missile. Don`t get me wrong, I`m not a conditioned bf2 pilot yet, but ACM is still the same as it was in WWII, although a tad quicker today.........:)

Theres some odd **** in BF2. although you have a tripled area to shoot at, you shoot at it, see the puffs, but youre not doing any damage. Apparently theres a sweetspot somewhere...

Actually gaining altitude in BF2 is kind of ****ed up, it doesn't follow physics AT ALL. The more alt you gain the higher speed you're travelling at.

Ya I figured it had something to do with those two factors. In fact, I think the J-10 wouldn't be nearly as overpowered if they just fixed the F-35's hitbox. Thanks again for the 'retarded roll' instructions. Tried it out and it works great.

Ya that's what I was referring to. It's the reason the 'going high' tactic on the F-35 works (as I'm sure you know).

I love flying f/a 18's but are they much slower than the other jets? i cant seem to lose anyone from 800 with after burners in a hornet???

It's not that the F-18 is slower, it's that this tactic really only works in the F-35 (because its afterburner gives more of a boost than the other planes). In an F-18 your best bet is to outmaneuver (turning back and forth) or else pull the good old Top Gun throttle reverse, letting the other guy fly right by you (the throttle on the F18 responds much faster than the other planes). Just be sure to have a flare ready because the guy will get a missile shot just before he passes by.
