Question about Ranks

Are the knife and pistol badges required for making Sergeant Major? If so, why aren't they listed as a requirement on bf2s.com's ranking page (http://ubar.bf2s.com/ranks.php)?

When I reached 20,000 a while ago, I didn't have my knife, pistol, or sniper badges, so I became a Master Sergeant instead of a First Sergeant. The only reason I cared was simply because I like the First Sergeant's stripes/insignia/whatever more; that little gold diamond in the center looks cooler than boring old rifles. :p

Okay, when I reach 50,000, I'll have the same problem, or will I? I"ve been assuming that I better get my knife, pistol, and sniper badges before then, or I'll be stuck with Master Gunnery Sergeant, and I'd much prefer being a Sergeant Major for the same reason as above: I like the insignia more.

Here's the thing. I was looking at the rank requirements on bf2s.com (http://ubar.bf2s.com/ranks.php), and it seems that those badges aren't required. For Sergeant Major, it only lists Armor, Transport, Helicopter, Aviator, Air Defense, Ground Defense--all of which I already have.

Now, I already received the sniper badge, but for the knife and pistol badge, do I actually need them for Sergeant Major? (Please, please, please say no. :))

Yes, I am amlost positive that you need them. Surely you can get 5 pistol kills in a round. It is SOOOO easy, just click really fast and aim for the head. Or shoot someone with the M24/L96/M95, then 1 shot with a pistol and they are done for. The 7 knife kills in a round is harder, but not much. Just think sneaky. At the square in karkand, there is a box you can climb on near the flag that people rarely look on top of. They run by, slice and dice. Or conversely, run around like a madman by the hotel.

It's not that I couldn't, but I just don't want to. :p I truly only play for fun, and sneaking around on foot to get close enough to knife someone is just not fun to me. Heck, I'm proud of myself for enduring the boredom and loneliness of sniperhood for one round to get my sniper badge! :laugh:

I looked at my ranking in BFHQ (i.e., in-game), and it says my next rank is "First Sergeant," so I guess you really don't need the pistol or knife badges. Thank God! :)

unless they have changed the requirements i do believe u have to have the knife and pistol badges to rank up to first sgt.

I guess it would make sense that to be Master Gunnery Sergeant, one would need to fulfill the requirements of simple Gunnery Sergeant first, and that was my original assumption, but after seeing the ranking requirements on the aforementioned website, I'm just not sure anymore. <shrug>


Oh, and a big *slaps forehead* about that "BFHQ First Sergeant" thing. Forget I said that. :p

there is no master gunnery sgt. it was saying to rank up to first sgt u would need the rank of gunnery sgt and the specific awards listed above. here check this link out

Dude, that's the link I have already posted twice above now. :p And according to it, yes, there is a Master Gunnery Sergeant. That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid becoming. I want to advance to Sergeant Major instead. :p (Both are at 50,000. My current score is around 38,000.)

Edit: And to further complicate matters, it states that the required rank to become a Sergeant Major is only Master Sergeant which is what I am right now, so it's looking more and more like I don't need to bother with the pistol or knife badges.

Well, not wanting to leave anything to chance, I just went ahead and suffered through two rounds on Karkand to get my knife badge and pistol badge. :)

Most boring and yet frustrating two rounds of my BF2 career. For now on, I think if I ever see anyone coming toward me with a knife, I'll just assume he's trying to get the badge and just let him kill me out of kindness. :p

I'm pretty sure you need all the first sergeant requirements plus the other ones (aviator, transport, helo, etc.).

It's a moot point for me now, I guess, since I have them all. :)

My only sticking point is that http://bf2s.com has always been pretty thorough about these things, and honestly, going by that site, there is nothing there that states that you need any of the First Sergeant's badges. If they were required, the minimim rank would be listed as "First Sergeant," not as "Master Sergeant." Again, refer to http://ubar.bf2s.com/ranks.php.

No.

You don't need them. When you get to 50k the only thing that determines whether you get Master Gunnery Sergeant or Sergeant Major is whether or not you have all the "vehicle" badges, as bf2s states. You do not have to also go back and meet the requirements for First Sergeant as well (eg pistol, knife etc).

Although you say you have them all now so it doesn't really matter any more. But you got your knife badge on your first round of trying...? Legitimately? I find that hard to believe. I've been trying for quite some time to get mine (it's the only one I still need for First Sergeant, and I'm within about 700 points now) and it's hard. It gets easier when you start thinking the right way, but it's still no walk in the park. I finally managed to get it last night... but the server crashed and my stats didn't get updated. I'm not amused... Lol

I did say it was very frustrating, didn't I? All I did was find a server running Karkand with an odd number of players (so I would be put on the MEC team) and then spawned in continuously at the hotel (flag closest to US' uncappable base).

For the pistol badge, I sort of got lucky in that I had three of the five when two guys came running around the corner. I took down the first guy and the second guy, I guess, was sort of surprised, so I was able to kill him, too, before he even fired a shot. :p Again, I admit, that was just lucky.
