Cartillery is an absolutely lame and cheesy tactic. I'm sure that EA didn't intend this to be an issue when they added the feature, and are now lamenting it and quickly working to nerf it along with fixing the botched server browser and crashing to desktop. Enjoy cartillery while you can, It's not likely to last long.

Next patch should add functional wind currents. Random ones, so you cannot predict how effective your drops will be. Virtual sandstorms and dust-devils would be cool too. Hey, i don't ask for much, do I?
Do you actually expect people not to do this because you ask them to? As for you claim that it is more beneficial to drop cars for your team your suggestion is laughable. It must almost always be a more useful thing for your team to kill enemy jets/helos than for a couple guys to get where they are going 1min faster. As far as I am concerned at this juncture if my commander ISNT dropping cars on enemy jets he is a liability to my team.
TokenBrit, as I said, enjoy it while you can. EA most likely didn't intend vehicle drops to be used as a more precise form of Artillery, if they had wanted that, they would have added a precision guided missile or something for the commander to use against enemy vehicles. Vehicles are meant for transport, not for landing on vehicles and destroying them in a ridiculous manner. You managed to survive without cartillery, you'll most likely survive when they most likely nerf it.
This is a desperate cry to commanders out there.
"Cartillery" is not the most effective use for vehicle drops!
Players should already be well aware of the dangers of large objects falling from the sky and dropping cars on 'em is easily countered by them holding down "E". Also, any commander worth their salt should know that making kills with artillery/supply boxes/falling buggies actually hurts their own command score overall.
On the otherhand, dropping vehicles for people stranded at bases without vehicles or out in the middle of no-where, keeps 'em moving. If they're moving, they're likely to be scoring points/killin people.
Be a good commander... drop the cars for your team instead of on the enemy!
Side note: Grunts, PLEASE don't stand directly under friendly car drops! As with the big red circle, the falling car icon does not mean "Run here and get TKed by the commander"!
One thing, the douchebags who resort to this tactic aren't exactly the ones who give a $hit about Team work and their command scores. So your elaborating on this issue to people who don't utilize the new option for that method in the first place.
Can an AT guy shoot the dropping vehicle? if so then this makes it a requirement for any chopper or jet pilot to play the AT class or have an AT base defender?
You can shoot the car out of the sky when it is falling. But if it's over a chopper or jet the falling debris will still destroy the chopper/jet.
I can survive with or without "cartillery" I never play commander anyway. However the simple fact is it is so drastically effective that at this current time I would MUCH PREFER my commander to be dropping those jeeps on jets, than for me to drive 100m a little faster, when I can walk it anyway. Sure as hell the other commander is doing it to us.
How does artillary effect your score badly? I always use it wisly and I never get a TK.
Whenever you as a commander make a kill you reduce the enemy's ticket count without anyone getting any points out of it. Since there's a fixed number of tickets and your score is based on the average score of your team, every kill robs you of potential points.
If you kill 20 enemies with artillery (and/or car drops), you've effectively removed 40 points that could have been scored by your team. Thus, you have reduced your own score.
I'm not saying that this should be your focus (scoring big as a commander), but creative manipulation of the battlefield through supporting your team makes the role much more interesting. To me, anyway.

(an interview with Tom Galt, the lead level designer of BF2)
for your convenience:
A new commander tool has been added as well, and that is the ability to drop light jeeps anywhere on the battlefield. This comes in really handy when you're stuck in a field somewhere without a ride. As commander though, I have the most fun dropping jeeps on enemy snipers! For all you snipers out there, always remember: fire and maneuver!
Further he says the following about squad hopping:
Unfortunately, a tactic has arisen that exploits and unbalances the squad mechanic.
So the first is as it's intended while the 2nd is an "exploit" (and he needed almost a year to recognize that something "arose"  ) - i would rofl if it wouldn't be this sad. But as this smacktard is the "lead level designer of BF2" i start to understand why this game gets crappier with every patch.
Imho they should fire jerks like this now, start fixing the bugs that are in the game from the day it was released or got introduced by some crappy patch and make the rest a server side option (dropping cars, squad hopping, ...)!!! Wtf is the problem with this - or why do jerks like this think they have a right to press a certain "this is the way this game has to be played" on us ???
EDIT: I'm right by saying that squad hopping isn't a server side setting for UNRANKED servers - am i ?
Frichen offtopic...but i just got off a 24/7 wake server that had something frichen weird. Our commander dropped artillery at the north base...and it never stopped. The admin was forced to kick all of us after accusing us all of hacking.
Here's what happened: Artillery on North Base...Artillery impact...We move in...more artillery impact...TK's on Commander...we wonder "wtf we though it was enemy commander...artillery rains on base for the rest of game constantly...one after another...werid

Here are my reasons for using Cartillery, since I play commander alot:
When my team doesn't ask for a vehicle, I use them to styfle the enemy advance or aid in our advance.
Killing a sniper on a roof that is keeping an entire squad at bay is good.
Destroying a jet over and over again so it can't leave the ground or delaying it from leaving the ground helps my team - need I remind you how a single jet pilot can wreck havoc on your team?
Destroying an enemy helicopter that is raping us, or damaging it so it has to go back to base.
Destorying the supply crate that enemy armor is using to repair as your poor AT guy gets killed over and over again can actually kill it.
