  • Black Screen / Click, Click / Crash to Desktop

    Hello Everyone,

Need help to fix my son's computer cause BF2 keeps crashing to the desktop.

    System:
    500W PS (20A 12+V rail)
    ASUS P5AD2 Deluxe Motherboard {Intel 925X Chipset}(latest drivers)
    3.4 GHz Intel CPU
    1GB 400 MHz RAM
ATI X900 Pro Graphic Card (updated to latest ATI drivers)
Onboard Sound (updated drivers with latest Mobo updates)
Has the most upto date BIOS (that is not a beta)
    Dual 80GB HDs

    O/S:
    Windows XP Pro

    Original Symptoms:
Click on BF2 Icon (version 1.02)
    Program Launches
    Screen goes Black
You hear a click click from the monitor
You are kicked back to the desktop

    Things tried:
    Update all drivers / Bios
    Ran Virus scan - clean
Ran Spybot / Adware - removed some junk
Ran Hijack This - removed some more junk
Ran Configsys - turned off a lot of booting programs chewing up Mem
    Defraged HD
    Ran Registry Cleaner
    Adjusted video settings to 1024x768
    Clean install of BF2
    Successful install of Patch v1.22

What am I missing?? Because I am getting the same crash as above!!

We wanted to upgrade to Patch v1.3 but until we can fix the crashing problem I do not want to try and put v1.3 on it!

Thanks a Million for any input,

Re: Black Screen / Click, Click / Crash to Desktop

Hi, that sounds a LOT like the early bug with the monitor refresh rate. I believe the default BF2 refresh rate is set to 60 Hz, and early on, if your desktop refresh rate was anything else than the BF2 refresh, it would load, go black, and crash to desktop.

Try changing your monitor refresh to 60Hz by:
    Right-click desktop -> Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Monitor.

Good Luck and hope it solves your problem

Re: Black Screen / Click, Click / Crash to Desktop

Most of the time people who have your problem (CTD when you launch the icon, you never manage to log onto the gameserver) is due to incorrect video settings.

When you uninstall and reinstall BF2 it doesn't remove the BF2 folder in /my docs/ and it's in here that your video settings are stored. So you end up with the same problem. I can't be sure that this will work but it has for many others :

      1) Delete the BF2 cache in My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache\

      2) Adjust the refresh rate in the video.con file

      From Gunny :

      C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001\video.con

(or 0002 0003 if you have more that one profile)

You can either edit video.con to 1024x768@60Hz which most monitors are able to handle. Here is the specific setting:

      VideoSettings.setResolution 1024x768@60Hz

... or delete the entire ..\Profiles\0001\ folder or the whole \my Documents\Battlefield 2\ folder.

If you delete the profiles or 0001 or battlefield 2 folder you will have to retrieve your account again, via the login screen. Your stats aren't lost, just your display and keyboard settings etc.

Re: Black Screen / Click, Click / Crash to Desktop

        Thank you for your suggestions.

I thought it might be a video issue, but did not think about the refresh rate! (duh)

I also forgot about that bugger of a folder in My Docs when we did the clean install.

I will try to fix that tonight, and let you know what happens!
