These days all the servers in my list have around 1000 to 2000 ping, when I choose a server and click to join the ping drops down to around 50 to 100....

It is called a glitch. Bf2 has lots of them. Get used to it. -

You mentioned you have seen this once or twice, so am I correct to assume it doesn’t always happen on your computer as it does on mine?
And to add, the server list takes ages to generate and does so in large groups rather than in a smooth increasing fashion which took half as long.
I really don’t get why the quality is getting worse rather than better?
I don’t believe it’s acceptable as you can’t tell what the true ping of each server is until you click on them and for some unknown reason once you do this a few times the whole thing locks up and you have to restart the game….
That’s an issue that I ignored for months as you used to be able to see the correct pings, now I can’t….Comment
