Ivan replied at length, speculating about possible online revenue models.
We will definitely have some form of free online multiplayer. However, we have not yet figured out how we're going to fund the ongoing operation of our MMO-like game... It could conceivably cost something. It could revolve around micro-purchases. It could focus on expansions and episodic content. It could be anything. The point is, we need to generate revenue for ourselves and our publishers so that we can maintain continual support while not screwing over the user. Without ongoing funding, we will be hard-pressed to justify spending money on patches and new content updates, the reason being: why work for people who are no longer making you money when you can focus on creating a new product to sell?

A very interesting thing to say. It wouldn't surprise me if 1.3 is the last patch released for BF2. Or, the last BIG one, anyway, quite likely there will be hotfixes and stuff, but I doubt a 1.4 will emerge.

You ever see 'ongoing support' for a console game?

The Xbox was the first console to introduce the idea of buggy released games that can be patched via Xbox live. Soon the consoles will spiral down the toilet to the level of PC game production.

Get it right the first time, by release date. You don't need 'ongoing revenue' if you get it right the first time, instead rushing garbage to the shelves for a fast buck.

THey will never get it right the first time.

Even if they did, the whining in the 6 months after will casterate the product into a kiddie safe pillow fight day care style.

That is what I see in online gaming.

At least in single player when you snipe something that body hits the ground hard in one shot. Not Bam -bunny BAM -dance BAM -turns to shoot you with 3 rounds.

Im surprise the electrical utilites have not yet been hit on for a percentage of the profits generated by gamers working high horsepower computers and environmental systems.
