to have BF2 glitches i need to defrag 2 times a week...
+ if your hard disks where the game and your page file is on have less then 15% free space,
you are having more performance issues then with just fragmentation...
ofc this is basic PC maintenance and i can imagine some gamer beeing to 1337 to even heard about defrag.... or understand what the page file is.

im having similar problems to you guys, it must be the patch because i formatted also, and have a decent system game use to run flawless, not it lags when there is action in 32 player servers here and there, I mean I can still own but just not as much, hopefully it gets fixed.

Try lowering the dynamic shaddows and lighting settings.

BF2 would have to be the worst game for resources i have ever played.

FS2004, Fear, Far Cry, Half Life2 and Counter Strike Source all play fine on my machine at maximum settings.

But there is no way i can get BF2 to play at maximum - especially the dynamic lighting and shadows.

Simply a poorly engineered game i reckon.

        Anyone agree?

        P.S., I have only a AMD64 3200 with 128mb 6600gt and 1gb RAM

Yep I’m very familiar with defragging but with paging file I’m not too clued up so I let the system manage it. Given that you just mentioned it I decided to take another peak and realised to my horror that it was not enabled on my D drive partition where all my games are installed. I set it letting the system manage it again like on my C drive. I’m using less than half of my disk space at the moment and it has currently allocated 4106MB for paging file space.

I then tested BF2 again and it has done absolutely nothing for its performance.

All of this is making me feel like upgrading my PC but then I think why should I if other people with better systems than mine are having the same issues? I don't have this problem with any other game. Even Doom 3 works great on Ultra high except for the ROE expansion but again I’m not the only one to suffer performance with ROE.

With expansion packs, poor performance seems to be typical and expected but when an original version works fine and then gets ruined with a patch along the way it's a bit wrong really. Game engines are supposed to get better and more optimised with every patch not worse!

Yes, turn off dynamic shadows and put the lighting on medium, you hardly even notice it ingame and get an insane performace gain.

The point is that with a system that could run everything on high with fps between 60-100, the patch has ruined it. I was getting FPS in the low 20's last night. Averaging 35fps but jumping all over the place. I refuse to turn the graphics down after spending the money to have them on high.

Ive already briefly mentioned this before...

It doesn't work for me. I can turn off the Dynamic shadows and light all together and turn everything else to low and the only difference I get is a measly few extra frames per second. I normally have everything on medium except geometry on high. I can also put absolutley everything up to high and I only lose another few fps compared to medium.

Therefore it doesnt make any sense to blame the settings.

I hope there is a playable demo comming out for QW: Enemy territory because if that runs smoother than this does now it will most likely be the last time I play BF2 and any other poorly maintained EA game online.
