i've been punkbusted for a high ping, but haven't a clue about it. i'm a genuinely accidental TK-er and team player (despite no VOIP)... and think i play by BF2 ethos.

It's the time taken in ms to send a packet to another machine and receive a response back. Lower ping is a good thing. But bear in mind this isn't the only thing that will affect your connection.

You'll also hear pings referred to as echo request and echo reply.

Ping is your server response time the bigger it is the further away the server is in the world or the crappier your connection. Basically the way it works in game is if you and another player both walk around a corner and both shot each other at the exact same time in the head the one with the lowest ping will report the headshot to the server first and they will live and you will die (if for instance you have a ping of 200 and the other player has a ping of 10). In the server browser in game it says ping at the top in white if you click on that you can sort servers by there ping your best of playing on servers with a low ping.

like the guys say closer the connection to the host an higher speed the better the connectio,
also if you have a old pc or crappy set this can cause lag.
if its a fast line an a slow pc then this will also cause lag as your pc is not fast enough to process the data recieved.
hence why some peps with only 1gig seem to get some lag even thou they have a ping of 20-50.
theres a guy in are clan hes on a fast connection speed but has a low end pc an gets lag every now an then.

The "PING" s the time it takes to send a message from your computer, to the server you are playing on, and back again. It is measured in miliseconds (ms). 1000 ms is the same as one second. If you have a ping below 100, it takes less than one tenth of a second for the game to respond for in-game actions. If someone kills you while you have 100 in ping, it will take 0,1 second before it shows up on your screen.

In bf2, pretty high pings are usually no problem. Anything up to 150 can be accepted without any mayor issues. Other games, like Counter-Strike, is getting really hard to play even if your ping is just above 80-100. The usual ping-limit (if you have over this, you will be kicked/banned) is 150, 200 or 300 in bf2. I've never seen limits lower than 150.

My ping goes way high (250) up when im joining the server, because my comp is working so hard. After being about 10 seconds inside the game, it drops to around 60. This often gets me kicked, since i got high ping before i press the join game button.

Generally I never join a server higher than a ping of 150, which generally means I can play West Coast USA servers from merry old England without and problems, I rarely encounter and lag due to distance. But in simple terms the lower the ping the better, anything above 170 is a real no-no :)

It's weird, I sometimes get better pings in UK servers than west coast servers. It's nice to reach accross the pond and kill.

Hi, does anyone know of a server in southern europe or Turkey, I have a top notch pc, but I was get approx. 230 ping, because of my geo. location. Its really frustrating, glitching almost every 3 seconds, and not being able to kill anything, even a stationary target in close quarters.
