    What happened to teamwork?

Every day I log on to Battlefield 2 hoping to find people who communicate with their mics, who work well together, people who coordinate with eachother. People who cover their buddies when they need to cross out into the open to revive their fallen comrade, people who don't give a damn about points or awards and just want to have fun. I never yet experienced this myself.

I WISH that every server of BF2 would be like this. But sadly, the game is full of stat padders, team killers, guys who don't give a damn about anyone but themselves.

Just thought I'd get that off my chest.

    Re: What happened to teamwork?

The team work factor definitely seems to be diminishing more each week that goes by. I personally am glad that not everyone has a mic or is willing to talk. The last thing I want is to have a nasaly 12 yaer old screaming in my ear that someone is shooting at him. I use a ventrilo server with a few friends and that is how we communicate.
If we stay any length of time in a server, I will invite the guys in my squad to join us on ventrilo, I mean the in game VOIP sucks Giraffe anus anyway.
The game is full of stat whores you can thank EA for that one.

The best thing you can do is find a good server with good admins and lots of regulars. Any of the Moongamers servers are great but any server will play host to the obligatory smacktards. If you think BF2 is bad in terms of the assholes that pervade it then you should try playing some fighting games online (Street Fighter etc) with MAME. There's nothing more humilating than getting your ass kicked 1on1 by a jerk that's constantly talking **** and kicks you off the game the moment you start making a comeback. Ok I just contradicted an earlier post of mine but I forgot all about how annoying MAME can be

            Re: What happened to teamwork?

Unfortually, i believe the whole rankings or more so, the points system itself, is to blame here.
Why on earth would a helo go and take out 1 tank attacking your flag, when he can simply hover at another spot for 10 minutes, spawn killing anything that pops up? Sure, there are folks that wouldnt do that, but believe me, those folks are the minority. Same goes for tanks, and other armor, sitting humvee shooters, claymore layers, snipers, and everyone in the game. The points system says, go where you can get the most points, not where you can do the most damage, in the forward movement of winning the game. There is a big difference. A properly squaded up team will win 99% of all games played. With the loss of teamwork, its hard to get in on that 99% each and every day.
Perhaps, changes in the scoring, should be the focal point. Lets look at a few.

Supply and Medics. You know what? DC didnt have this feature, and to be honest, I dont think BF2, needs it either. The old med kit cabinet worked pretty darn well. I mean most medics will risk life and limb to revive you in front of 4 tanks, 3 apcs' and 30 enemy soldiers. Guess what? I dont want you to revive me. Sure they get a point, but big deal. Perhaps, the best way in my opinon to do this would be that they ONLY GET POINTS for reviving and supplying SQUAD MATES. If not in a squad, they get zero points for medic revives and or supplies. Force squad work, this should work out well. And put balance back. (does a team of 24 really need 9 medics and 6 supply soldiers?, i think not) < more then likely it needs more AT and Engies.
            SQUAD HOPIN"
Regardless of what you really believe, squad hopin' does hurt teamwork. I mean if my squad is full and doing well, but both medic, and AT guy leave because they want to get another objective.......my squad now suffers. Pick a squad and work it. Changer later on, if its not to your liking. I get why folks squad hop. I do it even. The biggest reason though, and dont fool yourself, is again, to get to a point where you can net more.........what?..........yep, points. I mean my squad might be tacticaly taking over an enemy tank spawn. But now 3 of my squad members, take it amoungst themselves, to say, blah.....im gonnna go elsewheres. Fine.....but now you just put a nail into my squad getting successfully that tank spawn. And how do we end up losing the final round? By an enemy tank. Surprise.
            Armor Use.
Shouldnt armor's main focal point be ............other armor? If it were up to me, armor wouldnt get hardly any points for slamming at infantry spawn points. HOw many times you see that APC sitting at a spawn area, spamming, and spamming? Meanwhile, one flag back, an enemy apc is taking over a flag. This apc whore cant go and take care of the other armor? I cant blame him, he's racking up the points. Unfortunatly he is potentially the root cause of his team, in all actuallity losing. Nope, i would reward BIG TIME, points, to armor folks, killing other armor. Placing and forcing armor to hunt other armor. Same goes for helos, and planes. Low points for infantry kills, big points for attacking armor/planes. I mean i've seen one friendly and one enemy bomber in the air, same time, raping. All I could think was............couldnt one of these planes actually take out the other? Again, why? They are racking up cluster bomb killings at flags. Again, low points for infantry kiills, big points for taking out enemy plane. Perhaps, instead of cluster bombing repeatedly, the enemy plane might just go after the other plane, if he knew 10 points was his for taking down a plane with a plane. Course they could rape a carrier ....but you could put a timer on taht 10 points. A plane would have to be airborne say, 30 seconds, untill he got 10 ponts for a kill. Who knows.
Sorry for the long winded post. But really The points system is to blame. People are only doing what is more then likely gonna net them the points, not the win. Therefore, why not move the focal point of points gathering, to a more, natural, teamworking type deal.
I mean think about it for a second. A guy surrounded by armor, that if no AT guy is around, can kill 30 or so folks, before he finally gets whomped on. Why should this guy be getting 60 points for those 30 killls? When a less armed medic, barely can take out, say 20 guys in a round, for 40 points? I mean this just doesnt even make sense.

I dont think you can say that about EVERY server etc...not all are like this...out of the 4,200 that come up as playable to me, i play maybe a constant 10 or 20 of them...and they always seem to have enough teamwork to have some fun...just swap squads and you will find that if someone wants teamwork...then most of the other will play along.

                    Re: What happened to teamwork?

It's funny I'm not by any means an "anti-teamwork" guy but I may be able to shed a little light on this subject. When I first started playing I always squaded up. I had some excellent games with VOIP, staying with the squad and working as a group. I still do about half the time but there are times I find the constant VOIP annoying especially when you get in a squad where folks know each other and chat about things other than the game at hand. I also can only take playing with headphones on so much. As you say recently I squad up and 9 times out of 10 the squad is all over the map.

Part of it may be that BF2 is my first on-line FPS and unlike many I played the game in SP for a few months when I first got it not knowing any better. I got used to doing my own thing after all I was playing with bots. I also did virtually no ground pounding in SP as I could get any vehicle I wanted. When I first played on-line the only way I could stay alive more than a few seconds was to get in a vehicle. In SP I became fascinated with flying the jets (again not knowing the scorn that sometimes gets in the community). By the time I drifted to these forums and got an idea of what was going on, I already had some bad habits. I mostly fly jets, but in my defense, I have been getting kind of sick of flying all the time and have slowly gotten better at ground pounding to the point where I am average at it.

What I am saying is that folks that have played the whole battlefield series and frequent these forums have a good idea of how to act and behave while I imagine most of the players do not. BF2 may be their first foray into the series, and some may have developed bad habits playing SP and finally some folks were just born asshats.

Everytime i've ever tried to be in a successful squad it's been thwarted by artillery. Now i just cover flags instead of actively going for them. Unless i have to - or the flag is protected from arty. So incase you hadn't realised. Teamwork and squad play is more or less ruined by artillery.

                              Let's see. Considering...

                              -Jet Bombs (Splash Damage)
                              -APC (Splash Damage)
                              -Tank Shells (?Sabot + HEAT?)
                              -Artillery
                              -Helos.

...there is no real reason to work on a squad level. Too many weapond designed to kill you for being in proximity to your squad leader. Hell, in vanilla it's almost a punishment to play in a squad correctly because you know Artillery is aimed "DIRECTLY" at you.

...or a Jet is just going to ruin your day.
