I haven't played BF2 for a few months and after playing yesterday, I noticed DICE nerfed the air balance in new patch. Here is solution to not offend AA whiners and pilots.
J10 is way overpowered now. I played a bit and discovered that F35 cannot evade missiles, but J10 can. Since USMC have no change fight against skilled pilots, choppers suffer. Go read planewhores posts and look at video. So here's my list of small and easy things that DICE can implement in order to make game balanced.
1) View distance is reduced in order to save bandwith and graphics card power. My solution: you must be able to sky see up to 10km. Make terrain foggy/blurred, but don't do it with the sky. It is no big difference in bandwitch. If it is 40 people in small area or 4 choppers 4 planes in air + people around you (average ~10). It gives US Essex chance to know where plane is coming from etc. From programmers perspective: ~200 lines or code to add, ~20 to remove. Nothing special.
2) AA lock on distance must be however limited. 500m or something like that because otherwise they will be able to shoot across the map. From programmers perspective: 3 lines of code if(target.distance<=500) { lock.obtain(); }
3) Increase flying altitude. In order to successfully dogfight against J10 with F35 you need altitude. 800m is not enough. 2000m would give more plenty space and variety to the game. No increase in bandwidth, CPU or whatever with that. From programmers perspective: adjust few variables
4) From pilots perspective in pre-patch days obtaining lock was no problem, problem was getting in right position for missiles to hit. Now that there is no problem hitting targets, so obvious decision is to make obtaining lock harder. Make missiles radar guided. Eg. you need to maintain lock in order to hit. You can lock using your crosshair, it must take not 1 second, but 2. And during missile flight you must maintain lock by keeping the target in a little bigger circle (not 50% or your screen, but like 10%). Helis will still be okay because while you get the lock, you already fly past them. Don't like missiles - use guns. Fair fight. From programmers perspective: ~100 lines of code
5) Adjust J10 characteristics. Currently it seems that F35 is toned down, but J10 is not. Either increase F35 speed for like 30% or reduce J10 manevourability. I think adding speed to F35 would be the right decision because it would make dogfights more interesting. From programmers perspective: adjust few variables
AA untouched, balance problem solved.
Is that really hard DICE/EA?
