BF2 runs better on XP?

I have:

Desktop: Dell 400SC, ATI 9800 Pro, 2G ram, 2.8G Pentium, windows 2000
Laptop: Inspiron 6000D, ATI X300 mobility, 2G ram, windows XP

My laptop's X300 is much inferior to the 9800 pro, yet the laptop consistently runs better than the desktop on same graphics settings. You guys think desktop W2K is responsible for the low frame rate (~30fps) when compared to laptop's XP? (~45fps)

That has gotta be something else. Before I got my new system, I was running on a 9800 pro, playing on 1024 all medium and getting 40-50 fps and higher no problem. An X300 laptop should not be beating your other system. Try all the standard stuff like defrag, check for spyware/viruses, etc. This might need to go in the support forum as well.

You didn't mention the CPU on the notebook. A 1.5+ GHz Pentium M will generally outperform a 2.8 GHz P4.

If you've upgraded the RAM on the desktop with faster memory you may want to see here: http://www.wikifaq.com/Dell_PowerEdge_400SC_FAQs .

Also, I believe the 400SC is a server system so it's mainly designed for stability rather than speed.

Win2k is a pile of junk compared to XP when it comes to gaming. I used to be a win2k devotee until I switched to XP. Yes, I did gain many frames per second during the switch as well as greater color vibrance. For some reason win2k always displayed faded colors during games.
