How come it won't let me use the mouse to fly again?

I'm trying to setup my config to use the mouse for flying again (been using the joystick). Specifically, I'm trying to bind the mouse left/right movement as the Yaw (or turn) left/right in the config.

Every time I try to bind that movement the game tells me that it's conflicting with something in the common controls (and of course there's nothing like that in the common controls)

I tried manually editing the Controls.con file by switching the default config values for "Roll" and "Turn" in the Helo section, but that seemed to just hose up the file and I couldn't turn or roll at all in the game.

    Any help?

    Thanks,
    bone

You could try hitting the "Default" button. You'll lose any custom stuff you had beforehand, but it really only takes a couple of minutes at most to set things back, especially if you make note of them beforehand. Other than that I don't have any ideas. Good luck w/ it.

Just curious, why are you abandoning the joystick? (Don't want to start a debate over joystick vs. mouse vs. keyboard though)

Re: How come it won't let me use the mouse to fly again?

I do like the joystick and I couldn't figure out "how" to fly until I hooked it up and went with it over the keyboard and mouse method. However the last three *really* good pilots I've flown with have all been mouse and keyboard guys. I mean they could really put the helos in some tight places with a lot of precision.

I have an older joystick and it's got just enough play in it that it's never really centered which makes it very hard to keep a tight hover. Now that I "know" how to fly, I've noticed that with the mouse you can stop it dead on and just not touch it again until you're ready to move again. Another advantage to the mouse (in my case) is that I don't have to play with the throttle to find the sweet spot, I just let go of the keyboard button and basically hover at the same altitude until I hit the key to accelerate or decelerate (again it's a fairly old joystick to the throttle is exactly "precise").

As for going with the default values...by default "Turn" is "A" and "D" while "Roll" is the side-to-side axis of the mouse. I want the opposite. I want to be able to control the Roll with the keyboard and the Turn with the mouse.

It needs to be set to default, the make the appropriate changes to the pitch/yaw, direction keys, and invert mouse. Quite simple.

I DO start with the defaults.

I know how simple it SHOULD be.

What I'm saying is that every time I try to assign the mouse action to what I want it to be, a window pops up saying that I cannot use that action because it is already assigned under the Common controls. I can go clear every field under the Common controls and it will still give me the same message.

Give it a try. Create a new account. Start with the defaults. Go to the Helicopter tab. Erase the Turn and Roll/Yaw fields. Then try to assign a side-to-side mouse movement to the Turn field.

Did some more digging and finally found this:

The version 1.01 and 1.02 patch fixed most of the key binding limitations.

Some keys still cannot be reassigned. The following keys and buttons have either limited or no capacity to be bound to a Battlefield 2 command:

Keys and Buttons - Capacity to be Assigned
Keyboard Number 8 - Cannot be Assigned.
Keyboard Number 4 - Cannot be Assigned.
Keyboard Number 6 - Cannot be Assigned.
Tab Key - Cannot be Assigned.
Home Key - Cannot be Assigned.
F1-F8 Keys - Usuable only if removed from Land controls.
F9-F12 Keys - Cannot be Assigned.
Mouse Axes and Scroll - Cannot be Assigned.

(I'm sure this same information can be found elsewhere on this site but I thought I'd just go ahead and post it to this thread too)
