    Ram help

    Im buying a 7900 and another 1 gb of ram since i will need 2 gb ram to run on all high correct??

    I got 4 ram slots

    brown and blue then another 2 ram slots that are brown and blue.

    Both the brown ram slots have 1 512 ram stick. Now do i have to buy two 512 sticks for this to work or 1 1 gb??

    I don't really know how i'm supposed to have ram setup in my asus motherboardd :/

      either will work, but it what will work better? depends on your motherboard.

            Here is one thing to keep in mind. If your using 2 512's right now and plan on adding 1 1GB chip it may not be in your best intereset.

            Personally i would add another 2 512MB's of RAM to take advantage of the channelling with the Memory bus. Otherwise you will have 2 512 sticks running on a single channel and 1 1GB chip on the other side. I've seen it cause stability issues in some systems.

              +1, another good thing to do is get rid of all your ram (sell it to friends or whatever) and just get two 1GB sticks. This will eliminate several points of failure and Dual CHannel problems and etc....

                Personally I had 2x 512 and I added 1x 1GB and it didn't work. I had to get 2x512 for a total of 4 x 512mb.

                  He's right. I use to have 2x512MB, now I have 2x1GB and it works like a charm in dual channel. If your motherboard is capable of dual channel, it's better to do the same. If it's not, it doesn't matter, you can add another 1GB stick and should be fine. Read your MB manual to be sure.

                    Yeah get 4x512mb or scrap the lot and get 1 gb sticks.

                    Dont forget to check the RAM timings and make sure they are the same as well...

                      srry i didnt see your proc and mobo specs
                      but
                      if you have an intel proc you can add the 1 gig stick and should not have a problem

                      if amd proc like mine you can either add another 2x512 or sell your current and get 2x1gig

                      if you go the 2X512 route make sure you have a proc that can handle all 4 slots being filled...i have a athlon 64 3200 venice revision...the venice revision allows this and i believe the revisions before do not.

                      the only thing with 4 dims filled is you have to run the timings at 2t instead of 1t...if you get 2x1 gig you can still run 1t and is your best bet at the fastest possible setup

                      if you can afford it get the 2x1gig
                      if not see if your setup can handle a 4 dimm setup

                      and if your intel i doubt you really need to worry as much

                      ALSO make sure they are the same speed and can handle the same timings!!!

                            I dont think it applies here, but you really need to know how the channeling is done on that board..

                            My ABIT NF7S has 3 slots, 1 & 2 are 1 channel, and #3 is the 2nd channel. For a while I ran 2x256 in 1/2, and 1x512 in #3 and was able to run in dual-channel mode w/no probs. Went to 2x1gb recently so its not an issue anymore. Also, you need to know the latency so you don't mix them too drastically. Google cpu-z and run it, it'll give you all of the memory information..
