Is this the worst coded game ever?

I think I've had enough. I've lived through the patches, the cost of more RAM and a new graphics card, the occasional disconnection issues, but now I don't think I can take it anymore.

About a week ago I started having crashing issues, I had made no hardware or software changes. So I reinstalled and re-patched BF2, still quite frequent crashes. So I installed Windows XP, re-installed all my drivers, other software and BF2. Still crashing. Crashing when I change video or sound settings, crashing when I try to join an online game, crashes when I try to load singleplayer.

So I think, "hey, my software is all virgin now, must be hardware". So I do memory tests, hdd tests, temperature tests, the works. No problems anywhere.

I run up Farcry, ET, UT2004. Absolutely no problems.

Fu-huck this crap. Never in my 20 odd years gaming have I ever, ever encountered such a peice of crap software. Its a great game, yes, but trying to get BF2 working well is harder than anything else I've ever done in the world of IT.

Bring on Quake Wars, even if its half as satisfying as BF2 to play, if its reliable I coudln't care less.

And boo sucks to you DICE. I'd love to send you a bill for all the time and money I've expended getting this poor excuse for coding running.

I know, I know.. BF2's Code (Peepshow) but I love the game itself though and I am waiting for the next patch if that fails then.. I'm leaving.. But I don't know what you wanted to achieve with this thread only more (not you) whining people will say bf2 is crap etc. but in my eyes it isn't if you don't like the game then go away and play something different but yes it's badly coded and collision sucks but now a lot of people will come reply with same answers.. Hope the next patch is good and get rid of all the bugs and glitches and bad collision detection and exploits.. ( lol )

I feel sympathy for you
Personally BF2 has never let me down - in fact I would go so far as too say from my experience it has been one of if not the most polished game I have ever purchased

BF2 was actualy working quite well for my untill the patches started comeing out, I hardly play the game any more because of the number of problems ive had with it. You would think that this next patch might fix things but having read what they are doing I have no idea why they spent more time on new buggy features than fixing the present bugs.

Its ET:QW for me as well

I do like the game, I've played it a lot. But I'm frustrated and ****ed off and needed to vent. It seems like the patches only serve to make matters worse, not better. BF2 played better for me in its original incarnation, I couldn't see what other players were complaining about until they patched it. I can't see why a game requires so much effort to get running and why a game like Farcry can run so smoothly and pretty on my machine while BF2 is an ugly pig.

I feel for the mod makers as I can imagine any attempt to modify the existing code in this game only causes further problems. This probably explains why after 10 months of release no major mods have been released.

thats weird most of you say its a bad game. But after playing CS:S with my x clan for 5 months im glad i came back to the game!

Although the game did play for me in the original i find most people complain thanks to poor drivers or even expecting an old PC to play all on high. Im afraid EA doesnt work like that, they never did and they never will! Its mostly the peoples PC not the game!

yes their code could use some work..but every online game ive played that had something pretty complicated had their problems. cs still crashes sometimes on my comp and its been out since 1998 i think and i guess all they can do is just release nwe patches but even now im starting to get annoyed...now it takes like an hour to install a game and since al ot of problems are solved by reinstalling..it would be a pain

Bollocks. My machine is perfectly capable, and I'm not even trying to run it on high, or even medium all the way. Explain why after 8 months of no problems I get issues now. AND with a complete reinstall of XP, all the latest drivers, several re-installs of the game and patches (using different install disks and patch sources), about 15-20 hrs of patching, testing of hardware, etc. I can't even get it to play on low now or even survive longer than a couple of minutes in the menu section.

Sure, I'm not a complete computer genius, but I've been working with them for long enough to know it shouldnt be this hard.

That definately is weird. Most of the problems specific to BF2 that I've had are information losses during game (so I shoot someone with a tank but the hit never registers with the server so no damage occurs) and bad patching. I think the community has to come in terms with the fact that BF2 wasn't meant to be an epic game like '42. From what I've seen, it looks like it was mostly an engine test for 2142. I really don't think it's healthy to hope that the next upcoming patch will suddenly make the game 100%, because it's really hard to alter the core coding of the game with a simple patch. The best bet for BF2's future, if they wanted it to last longer than 2 years, is to release the game all over again as a 2gb file using your cd key as proof of purchase. And I don't see that happening.

There's no reason to expect BF2 to last, mostly due to the fact that there are so many games coming out in the next year or so that are more than double the complexity and visual quality of BF2. It's a great game, and it's served it's purpose. We can only hope that 2142 has benefited from all the frustrations a lot of the community has gone through with BF2.

So while the Golden Patch might not be around the corner, perhaps the gameplay you want is in the next game of the series: Battlefield 2142.

Only if it's an extremely awesome step up from BF2 in terms of gameplay and is bulletproof reliability wise. Anything less and I'm very NOT interested in another DICE game.

I strongly suspect that 2145 is going to be a reskinned copy of BF2. Sure, there will be different weapons, maps, etc. and even some new physics but the basic code will be the same. Don't expect a huge improvement in performance or reliability just because it is a new title.

That said, all of the problems that I have had with BF2 I have been able to resolve through a little bit of sleuthing and deductive troubleshooting/rebuilding.

Ive come to expect games being pretty much junk for the first couple months if they are released by EA/DICE. I dont expect any better for 2145. I luckily havent experienced any unresolvable problems with the BF games but damn I put a lot of money into my machine to play them. 512mb upgraded to 1gb to play BF:V and 1gb to 2gbs to play BF2 :|

They are good games, I just think they need a little more work to pull them off. Good concept, bad launch.

I must be extremely lucky or something. Aside from the occasional connection loss (Gamespy: there was an error.......) I have no problems. Never have. Every patch has installed the first time, no trouble.

I know it has ****ed a lot of people over though. Several in my clan have had catostrophic problems associated with BF2. I'm even running the DCon beta (mods are sometimes known to be unstable) and have never had a problem.

Best thing, is to get it working so you are fairly satisfied with it, and leave well enough alone.
