I think it was going to be used for the laser guided missiles, no? In my opinion it would have made them completely useless since you'd be depending on the bomber pilot to be facing the target that someone else is designating with the laser. As-is the laser guided bomber missiles work fine.

Hard to say what the intended use would have been...

I could see it being very handy for high altitude laser bombing. It would allow bombers to fly high and release bombs without needing to get down low for locks. They could have used it for AT support too. Beam a target from one position and let ATers take it out from cover. Or to call in pinpoint arty. Or in combination with weapons we never saw.

I can see why it was dropped tho. How would you credit points? How many players would actually use it (Tribes had laser targeters, but almost no-one ever used them)? Would it have made air domination even more dreaded?

EA got bad reviews during beta testing of that particular action (the infantry laser guy). Basically, the guy painting the target would get bored quickly. I think it would have been cool if the weapon used to destroy the target was a lot more powerful. I'd still love some low grade nuclear weapons. Or maybe a MOAB =)
