Build your own, honestly its the best bang for your buck and actually putting together a computer and making it work is very rewarding and educational.

If you are worried about "breaking" something, dont... putting together a computer is very easy... dont be intimidated!

          You can do it!

Parts list you will need from scratch:

Case (A place to put all your parts)
Power Supply (Takes power from your wall & makes it into power your PC can use)
Motherboard (Stuff gets plugged into this, like CPU, Video card, Hard Drives)
RAM/Memory (Get 2 gigs, its cheap)
Processor (Your computers brain, I like AMD, some like Intel, whatever)
Hard Drives (Get two of these too, any size you want... bigger holds more. One for your system files(Windows) and one for other stuff (Games))
Video Card (Makes pretty pictures... get a PCI Express card with 256 MB of memory on it)
Optical Drive of your choice (DVD Burner, CD Burner, Plain old CD ROM, whatever fits your budget...)

          Optional Equipment:
Sound Card (Many modern motherboards have solid sound processing chips on them that can replace many 3rd party sound cards)
NIC (Network Interface Card) Most motherboards these days have a NIC built in... some have two for whatever reason)
Floppy Drive (Nearly a dead technology that is somewhat useful still... mine is unplugged and I never use it...thats what USB Thumb-drives are for!)

Buy those parts, of course, with some research to make sure you dont buy an Intel CPU to fit onto an AMD compatible motherboard... and put them together, pop in your windows install disk and get started! Its easy!!!!!

Yeah, build your own, sometimes with pre-assembled machines you pay for parts you don't necessarily need. And basically the big makers skimp on the graphics card, so if you built your own you could go for the best card within budget and tone down your CPU or something else not as important for creating nice visuals.

For 1000 pounds you could easily make something that exclipsed that Dell.

              Build your own.

In addition to what everyone else has said, which is all true and very good advice, there is another reason for building your own.

It won't have gobs of useless and annoying "applications" that do nothing but slow your computer down. You will be absolutely shocked at the speed that "unencumbered" XP runs at. My gaming rig takes 8 seconds to go from pushing the power button the showing the desktop without an hourglass.
