    AMD Recalls 3,000 Opterons

    By Joseph F. Kovar, CRN
    5:27 PM EDT Fri. Apr. 28, 2006
AMD on Friday sent notices to OEMs and system builders that it is recalling 3,000 Opteron processors that may not work properly under "extreme conditions." The single-core Opteron x52 and x54 processors in question were produced in late 2005 and early 2006. According to the AMD notice, the company identified a "test escape" that occurred on a limited number of the Opterons.

AMd sells hundreds of thousands of opterons each quarter, odds of it being anyone on these board is slim to none. Also they are the x52 and x54 variety and single core. Both of those chips are reletively expensive starting at $500 and going up from there.

Im sure this will ding AMD's reputation a little, but nothing to really worry about. Of the entire CPU supply only 3,000 were affected and AMD has taken measures to recall the faulty chips. In addition its an extremely rare problem that only happens under an almost artificial system load.

This isnt good for AMD, but it certainly isnt anything to be worried about. This is akin to Intel recalling the original 1.13ghz PIII because of overheating, and not nearly as bad as the little known floating point math bug with pentium pro and pentium II.

Anyways AMD was smart to break the story on a friday and set the agenda before bloggers or newspapers were able to get any leaked info and churn the rumor mill. I dont think any damage has been done, only a little slip up thats all.

Actualy of the 3000 they are recalling it is likely only a few of them are actualy faulty, manufacturars make things in batches (amd in batches of 3000) they test a few products in each batch and pass of fail the entire batch.

Its likely they had a couple of failing CPU's after they passed that particular batch so they are recalling all 3000.
