HELP: How do you judge distance with a sniper rifle

Ok so I just bought BF2, loving it so far apart from being raped on each map but still it's fun.

I am trying to become proficient with a sniper rifle but am having a lot of trouble even hitting anyone, let alone making headshots.

I have read the guides posted on the tips forum, but I dont understand how to judge the distance between myself and the target.

Also could someone explain what the 4 yellow lines that appear when you move your crosshair over someone sometimes mean.

I am not sure why I am having so much trouble, maybe shooting too far away? Is there some kind of on screen indication of your distance to a target?

I am getting close to my first unlock, would the sniper rifle be a good choice? Cant remember the name sorry.

Yellow lines - They mean you have hit the target
Distance - look for a nearby flag, it's basically the same distance between you and the flag most of the time

edit: the m95 unlock has a better range, lower accuracy and shoots through glass

Re: HELP: How do you judge distance with a sniper rifle

I suggest looking at several of the Sniper movies. These movies show you how good to better than good snipers use their weapon well.

The first step in using a sniper rifle is having a good ping. The better the ping the less you have to lead your target.

Second is knowing your scope (i.e. the M95 you use the bottom of the crosshair, not the middle of the 3 pixel crosshair).

Once you have those two down you'll be well on your way to becoming a proficient sniper.

Try picking up sniper kits. They will usually have the unlocks in them to try out. That goes for all kits BTW.

i shoot most of my victums from 5 to 200 meters! the closest and faster you are the better and easier head shot you can get...

also there is nothing better than seeing an enemy sitting in a tank turrent or hummer turrent spraying all of your teamates with lead...and then popping around the corner line up a hs and his body rag dolls all over the turrent!!!

i play the sniper role in and around my squad where i feel i can better assist them in not dying by taking out threats that are hard for them to hit (aka enemies in turrents) also i bulk up the squads defence with 2 claymores in obvious enemy attack routes when capping a flag!

thats me but it may not work for you.!

If you want to get to the L96 (The DREAM RIFLE of the game), the M95 is required to unlock first...If for nothing else BUT to get to the L96 (Provided you want to stick to perfecting your skill at the sniper class), I recommend unlocking the M95...L96 is one NICE rifle...

Good luck ,good hunting on the servers...

            OUT!

You can judge the distance between yourself and the Target by simply using the Flags (press the Alt key) for reference.

When you have your distance to a flag you can do some simple math ...

... and work out the distance to your target from that. (Use a measure tape on your monitor).

Because there is bullet drop in BF2 you have to compensate for any given distance and height difference you have when sniping at your target.
Somebody in the forum did some calculations some time ago and it boils down to this ...

My personal best Extreme Long Range kill was at 453 meters, but average kills are either below 150 meters (Sharqi, Karkand and Masthuur) or between 200 - 300 (Dragon Valley, Dalian Plant, Daqing Oilfields). Check this link for my kills per distance.

All this looks complicated but if you really wanna learn how to exactly get the headshot/kill-distance correct you will either have to play/learn and miss a lot or use this method and get used to the different distances in a map.

all i can add is that practice will teach you what you need to know. just get a feel for it. i don't have a clue what the distance is for targets i shoot at. all i know is that at close range i aim towards the top of the head. for longer shots i aim a little above the top of the head, and for really long shots i aim a little higher than that. i'm not the greatest sniper, but i hold my own.

I dont have time to judge distance. I see target in crosshairs and engage.

The rifles in BF2 are not that advanced and effective ranges are less than 400 yards anyhow by design.

Same here...Sides, by the time I whip out the trusty battlefield calculator to figure it out that way, the target is gone or already been dropped by another seat-of-the-pants, learn-by-doing Sniper like I already am...LOL

Re: HELP: How do you judge distance with a sniper rifle

I'm guessing you're a beginner, so really, bullet drop is one of the last things you should be worrying about. Hi, Jemme!

The things that kill your accuracy the most are movement, view movement, and position.

Movement, just like every other gun, moving around causes you to become temporarily less accurate. View movement, UNLIKE any other gun, moving your view around will cause you to be temporarily less accurate. The longer you have your crosshairs fixed at a location, the more accurate your shot will be. And finally, you're most accurate while prone, standing accuracy is very poor.

Also, actual accuracy: The M95 is as accurate as the semi-autos, but has a more powerful scope. The M24 and L96A1 are the most accurate, but don't pierce body armor like the M95. You are actually slightly more accurate crouched with those two than you are with the M95 or semi-autos.

And just in case you don't know, holding down the trigger on a bolt-action will keep you in the scope view, allowing you to see the hit indicator and potentially how your target reacts.

WOW, lots of replies thanks to everyone.

I am going to check out the sniper movies, which I presume I can find on this site, and basically just practice I guess.

There are some crazy good players out there though, and more often than not I am getting killed before I even know what is going on.

I didnt know the different sniper weapons had different targetting scopes, is there anymore info of this? I usually just use the American sniper, not sure of the name of the weapon. Do I target dead center with the scope of at the bottom?

i have to say though....a little off topic but

sniping is one of the most satisfying kits i think...

i said it before and ill say it again...there is nothing like watching the ragdoll physics of someone you have just head shotted at close range...love iT!!

Well I meant more in the fashion of shooting the target first and figuring out the distance after that. The first view times at least. After that you should try to remember approximately what the given distance is for a target in a certain spot as opposed to your own position in the map. And compensate accordingly the next time you see a target out there.

But like my 'good friend' PHPT allready mentioned its not the first order of business. Allthough his own experience in this field is somewhat lacking. Try staying within 150 meters of targets, in a level field of fire, and you dont have to compensate at all.
