Will we ever get a fantasy-setting Battlefield?

The next Battlefield is Battlefield 2142, a sci-fi game with mechs, hover craft, thermoptic camo, and what not. But do you think we'll ever get a fantasy-setting Battlefield?

Personally, I prefer sci-fi over fantasy. But if you look at popular culture, sci-fi is pretty much dead, while fantasy stuff is very popular (Lord of the Rings, Narnia). So I'm surprised that DICE hasn't tried to make a fantasy-based Battlefield game yet. I'm sure it would be really successful.

A fantasy style Battlefield might be weird to think about at first, but it would be possible. Instead of aircraft, you'd have "pilotable" dragons or other creatures you could fly on. Imagine instead of a Blackhawk helicopter, you have a large insect that can carry up to 6 people to and from places. Instead of a strike fighter jet, we'd have fire-breathing dragons you could ride.
Instead of tanks, jeeps, and APCs, we could have various gigantic mystical war beasts.

For infantry classes, of course you'd have the classic RPG stuff. Melee warriors (close range fighting, maybe shotgun/SMG type weapons), ranged archers (snipers), healers (medics), and wizards (umm... support?).

Anyway, I hope that DICE makes a fantasy-setting Battlefield game some day.

well first off, what you would need to make it a good game is its own style of gameplay. if you do what DICE is doing with 2142 its gonna suck. what you are saying, is basically like make new models for each thing. same gameplay, different pictures.

it would need a whole new gameplay style and type. but still, it just wouldnt work out. if you want a massive battlefield of fantasy try Lineage 2, or Wow or everquest. thats why most MMO's are fantasy and most FPS are action-type, because thats what works best.

It could be argued that WOW, Lineage, and Everquest are all basically the same games, but with different graphics and slight changes. That's kind of why I think a fantasy Battlefield game would be great. There aren't any good FPS fantasy games out. Hexen and Heretic are so old that most people on these forums have probably never heard of them. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is coming out soon, and will hopefully be great. Especially since one of the game designers is from the BF2 team. But that's just one game. Meanwhile, we still have about a hundred MMORPGs coming down the tube... each trying to be the next Warcraft. Then , we have Battlefield 2142 and Quake Wars coming for the "futuristic battlefield" genre. Certainly DICE would like to go fantasy eventually, no?

The gameplay would not have to be identical. In RPGs, casters need to have time to prepare their spells. And much of the skill to using a caster is knowing what spell to use in what situation. So it's less of a question of how good you are aiming and shooting people. If you like to "shoot" people, you'd play an archer. If you like to get up close to people and kill them, you'd play a warrior. If you'd like to do more stealthy stuff, you'd play a Rogue. Finally, if your hand-eye coordination sucks and you want more slow-paced decision making gameplay.. you'd go for spellcaster.

For the most part, I despise RPGs, and it usually bores me to death to play a math-based combat game, where numbers are being crunched in a quasi-turn based manner. The combat drags out too long and is far too awkward. I'd really like to see a Battlefield Fantasy game that fixed up all that.

There's nothing I hate more than those overrated LOTR movies. EA will probably make a BF WOW 6 months after BF "quakewars halo ripoff" comes out because they only go with formula.

a fantasy battlefield would lose all of its core people who just love shooting guns and flying planes rather than swords and dragons. they would attract people away from WOW and other games, but not from bf2 or bf2142
