Creating Linux Server?

I want to create a Linux server to run and test some mods. I am not very familiar with linux and have minimal experience with it. Is there a tutorial somewhere on how to create a battlefield 2 linux server or would anyone be willing to lead me through this?

battleracer 1.2? if so the sir. commuity hosts that mod and we play it often.

easier to buy a host then to strugle with trying to use one.

Linux is really easy to use.

If you want to setup a server for local use, I would just use a windows system. No learning curve that way. Plus, you can run the BF2CC Daemon really easy on a windows machine.

If you are planning on a server for a colo, linux is the way to go. I would recommend Centos. Its based on Redhat Enterprise Server so there are lots of books out there to help learn from. But, if this is only for a game server, go rent one. Try escapedturkey for a lowcost solution. Its not the best but it is lowcost and great for testing out some mods.

Are you planning to run this in your home?
Is it just for you to test or do you plan to have some people from the internet connecting?

You may want to install a vmware virtual machine on your windows box and install linux inside it. It's most probably not a good final solution, but it's a good way to mess around with linux and try things out. It will also allow you to configure both server and client on the same physical machine.

if you have an extra hdd, you could always install ubuntu linux to learn and mess with. its pretty user friendly.

it was just an idea i was playing with. i was hoping to mayby get about 16 ppl in a server but my ISP isnt real hot on the upload, I dont quite meet the server minimun

Fedora is fine but for someone starting out and with a server, you may want something that is more stable...that is why I suggested Centos.

Fedora is the cutting edge. It us updated every quarter with the latest and greatest. But, if you are not that technical with linux or the apps themselves, then you may run into problems. Some of the new packages may not work with the game server.

If you are running a local server and want linux, then one with a gui will be fine. If you want to learn linux to use as a desktop, then Fedora, Ubuntu, SUSE, or CentOS can all be used. You can find out info about a lot of different Distro's at distrowatch.

For servers though, do not install a gui, just use the command console. I run all of my "internet-facing" servers only with console, no need for a gui for an internet server. Everything is done from the command line. Less overhead on the server itself, the throughput for remote admin, and less of a security risk.

Here is a link for VMware. I have been using it since 1997 when I bought a copy to run my MS classes. It gives you as many virtual "computers" as you system can support. I had it loaded up on a laptop with preconfigured server environments for whatever MS class I was teaching that week. They now have a player so that you can loadup preconfigured environments, but I have not used it since I have a full workstation version.

Cigar_Man already gave some extra info. Just want to add that apart from VMPlayer (free, but you cannot create a server environment) and VMWorkstation (about $200) there is the VMServer version which is now free (probably does need registration).

If it blows then please do explane why 90% of BF2 servers are Linux, or why 60% of hosts use Linux, or why industry professionals use Linux.

Linux is just superior to windows, in terms of stability, safety and easily usage. It is much easier to solve problems too and install software, yada yada yada.

There are millions of reasons why to use linux over windows, its free is one of important ones too.

Whatever distro you may want to choose, they are all pretty much the same, differ in some minor things.

you wont have many problems using it, if you used like msdos before and are familiar with typing and not clicking :p yes, you will have to learn some basic commands, but hey thats just a process, once u master that, its all piece of cake. and yes, you will master it, like i said, its way easier than finding one hidden, secret check box under 7 levels of menus in windoze.
