best anti-virus for gamers?

i was wondering what the most compatible anti virus is for gamers. i've tried mcafee and now i have nortons. they both suck IMO. i heard that there are some good ones that dont jack up your computer and freeze it. what do you use?

if i decide to play for a while...i generally shut off my anti-virus program from bground scanning..it makes the whole game a lot smoother ... i mean this mite not sound safe but its usually rare that u get a virus in-game.

Also...i accidentally left my anti-virus off for like a week and basially if u go to good sites (not piracy or porn sites) then u prob wont get any viruses cuz i didnt

I use Norton Internet Security 2005 on my computer and it seems to work just fine to tell you the truth. I really do not notice any interference with gameplay. Maybe it is just your computer.

I know a lot of people that swear by NOD32, but I really like Trend Micro's antivirus program. It's fast, cheap, really good. Just be sure to only buy the antivirus, their firewall and antispam programs aren't nearly as good.

I'll agree with you about norton, but not McAfee, I love it. I used to have the full Norton internet security pack and it made my newly built computer, which otherwise performed amazing, grind to a complete halt. It added like 30 seconds to the startup, and I couldn't close all remnants of the program without my system going unstable. I got McAfee, just the essential parts- antivirus, antispyware, and firewall, and it doesn't slow down my system at all, it's like nothing's running in the background, for me at least.

Ya i am using PCCILLIN too and i like it. Pretty unobtrusive as antivirus programs go (norton is pretty crappy and i can't stant mcafee). It has some nice other features too.

I like Sophos. I keep it running all of the time and it does not effect my gameplay at all. In the past, some of the updates did cause a problem with active scanning on but they solved that problem a while back.

Only problem is that it is not cheap, but well worth the costs. One of the best antivirus programs out there.

Yea ok it doesn't have many features,(auto update & complete test @ boot up) but it scans in the background and if you run a manual test it finds viruses (if they're there!!)

What more do you need from an AV prog?? Have used it for years with no probs.
Mind you i work in I.T. so if i do get any problems i can easily sort it :laugh: :laugh:

Yea I got mcafee too. It doesn't bother my gameplay and I leave it on all the time. Except maybe the once in a while pop up that says you got new updates and telling you its updated. All that does is like stagger your game for a second or 2 and your good to go.

agree to that, i'm running Trend Micro PC-Cillin and works very good.

Just don't go with Norton, it's way to big and bad currently. McAfee wouldn't be the best choice either.

I currently use AVG Free, which hardly takes any system resources and does the job.

I have Norton 2003, you know the version that gives a year automatically upon install? Oops I have said too much.....
