BF2 Crash (In-Game) Weiiiird...

Augh! Well, I've searched around the boards and haven't found any solution to this problem.

Here are my comp specs:

MSI Neo4 Platinum MB
AMD 64 bit 3500+
2GB OCZ DDR400
2x 200GB WD Hd's
BFG Geforce6800GT OCX
Windows 32 bit XP Professional

I am currently completely patched up. Everything is up to date.

RANDOMLY, I'll be playing BF and my computer will crash. It will crash is such a weird fashion that the screen goes black, the sound locks up (repeats), and I have to physically turn off the computer. The restart button won't reboot it. Weird.

I've reinstalled Windows completely. I reinstalled BF. Same problem. Happens out of nowhere. I'll be playing along and poof. Kills my computer.

I have had no other problems with any other graphics- intensive games. Everything else works perfectly fine. I haven't had this problem until 1.22 patch, so I assume there may be buggy code?

Has ANYONE had this problem? I'd at least like to know that I'm not the only one. This is a very aggravating problem. Any help or suggestions would be fantastic!

I'm going to run memtest86 tonight and see if it's maybe a RAM problem. What other ways can I try and figure out WHAT is doing it?

I've tried various installs of Windows. I've updated everything. I've tried rolling back my nvidia drivers to ones that worked in the past. Still, the system will just CRASH. I can't figure out where to go

Sometimes my bf2 crashes but it doesn't freeze my computer. Does this happen once and a while or everytime you try to play bf2?

Make sure you have the right hertz set in game and what you have set as your desktop refresh rate.

Happens to alot of people. problem is with the game i believe, its crashed on me before, but not in a game, usually on the server hunt area.

*edit* didnt see that it was your whole computer, thought it was just BF2. No idea whats wrong, try checking the tech-support forum.

Well see, that's the tricky part. It's not just the game crashing, it's the entire system. No blue screen. Just black, then nothing. Have to turn the effin' comp off

It happens in-game at random moments. Sometimes I'll be playing for 3-4 rounds and poof, gone. Sometimes I'll start the game and play for literally 15 minutes and poof.

I thought it might be the refresh rate as well. Could that really cause a huge crash? I have it set at 75 hz for desktop as well as in-game. I run a moderate resolution in-game as well. Well in the middle performance for my 6800GT.

Ugh, this is driving me insane.

Yeah my whole graphics card broke because of it... I had a x800xl and then I returned it and got a new one and it broke again and I had everything set right and drivers all updated. I dont like ATI anymore lol.

A buddy of mine had simular issues. Turned out to be heat build up and all he had to do was turn his multi-speed fan up. At it's normal setting, he could play HL2 fine, but BF2 would lock up and die rather like you discribed.

Check your fans for build up of gunk and make sure they are all turning when you power up.

Not saying this for sure, but it's a possibility that lots of people miss. Could also be bad RAM.

Often Nvidia cards build up heat, as Wargimp said in a general way. I found that with the 7800 GT BF2 would crash almost twice a day on my friends pc. Installing a 80 mm fan to the existing one doubled the heat reduction (on the graphics card) fixed the problems completely.

Edit: Overclocking is a possibility to, OCing can drastically heat up the card. If you do not have the option of cooling your card better, you may want to consider Under-clocking your card. As bad as it sounds, it reduces heat, but your quality (video specs) may go down somewhat.

I would check your PSU. Verify that ur rig has enough power. Hope that helps!

Alright. Update.

Ran Memtest86 overnight for 7 hours. No ram problems whatsoever. So that may clear that.

To kushcompany: yup, PSU is a brand new Antec 550 watt power supply. Ample power for my CPU/Ram/cards

to Raiden47, an 80mm fan installed onto the graphics card? Or just added to the computer? I too was thinking maybe it was heat buildup, as my case isn't that cool. Heck, I may even put a box fan right up to the case and run BF2 and see if I can get an errors to rule out heat.

Yeah, you could try taking the side of the case off and running like that to see as well...

Welp, doesn't seem to be heat-related. Although now it seems to cut out specifically about 15-20 minutes into the game.

Changing refresh rate doesn't seem to help (I can only use 60 or 75 hz.)

I'll try using my buddie's 6800GT in a bit.

If it's not that, then WOW I am stumped.

I have the same stuff happen to me... its just getting hot. For a quick fix just take off the sides of your case.
